Where BBQs Happen in Japan
Unlike some countries where you can grill almost anywhere, in Japan BBQ is usually done in designated spots/BBQ Permitted zones:
- Riversides (川辺, kawabe) – Popular in suburban and rural areas, where people grill near cool streams and rivers.
- Beaches (海岸, kaigan) – Coastal BBQs are common, especially in Kanagawa (Enoshima), Chiba, Okinawa, and other seaside regions.
- Public Parks with BBQ areas – Many urban parks like Showa Kinen Park (Tokyo) or Maishima Seaside Park (Osaka) have rental BBQ facilities. We have organized on a park area
- Campgrounds & mountains – Families and groups often combine BBQ with camping, hiking, or fireworks festivals.

The Atmosphere
A Japanese summer BBQ is lively, casual, and social:
- Groups: Families, university circles, coworkers, or friends.
- Set-up: Tarps, folding chairs, tents, and portable grills.
- Music & games: Bluetooth speakers, card games, frisbee, badminton.
- Fireworks (花火, hanabi): Small handheld fireworks are a must after the sun sets.
- Relaxed pace: BBQs often last several hours, with people eating in small batches as food comes off the grill rather than all at once.

Unique Features of BBQ
- Tents and Chairs we can lend our tent, chairs, and others possible equipment from the Park BBQ authority.
- Teppan plates for noodles and seafood instead of only open grills.
- Communal cooking – people gather around one or two grills instead of individuals grilling their own food.
- Portable, lightweight setups since people often bring everything on public transport.
- Cultural etiquette:
- Someone often takes the “grill master” role.
- Food is shared evenly.
- Trash is carefully separated for recycling, and everyone helps clean up.

A Japanese summer BBQ is not just about grilling food—it’s a seasonal event filled with nature, social bonding, and summer nostalgia. It combines the smoky joy of yakiniku, the fun of festivals, and the cooling relief of rivers or beaches, making it a beloved way to celebrate summer.
