Tips for a great profile on Google Maps

We hope you’ve been enjoying the new in-app Following feature on Google Maps! One simple, but effective element that will help if you want to encourage followers on Maps is to have a great profile. Read on for our tips on how to make yours even better.

Feature a clear profile picture

We recommend a well-lit image that showcases your personality. Most opt for a head shot or portrait of themselves, but this is not mandatory. Not into showing images of yourself? Maybe you collect sneakers and want to show off your kicks. Maybe you love reviewing dog-friendly coffee shops and want to showcase a photo for your best fur friend. Feel free to get creative with it!

Use a snappy bio

You only have a few moments to capture the attention of a potential follower, so make them count. Are you an award-winning athlete who also happens to be a foodie? Do you work in finance, but secretly love immersive theater? Does your side hustle include creating handmade jewelry? Tell us what makes you unique and what you like to review on Google Maps.

Give only as much information as you’re comfortable with

While we want a glimpse into your personality, don’t feel obligated to give too much info. You don’t need to list your place of work, social media handles, or neighborhood (unless you want to).

If you have other tips, feel free to list them in the comments below. You can also add your Google Maps profile below to encourage other Local Guides to follow you!

Your profile is a kind of advertising for yourself, so all the best practices for good advertising also apply here. To me one of the most important ones is: make sure you stand out from the crowd, try to be different (and thereby potentially interesting) from all the rest.

To figure out what something ‘mentionable’ could be, just ask yourself: what do other people appreciate about me? What do they find special about me? And don’t just think “there is nothing special about me”… there is something unique about everyone (which happens also to be the basic principle of evolution).

Our Profile Is our identity.

Based on my point of view, these all things or tips will makes the good and amazing profile.

There are,

  • Good &simple(no editing) profile photo.
  • Our Nature.
  • Our Hobbies
  • Our work
  • National flags
  • Emojis
  • Social media links
  • Our projects like accessibility, clean the world, clean the map.
  • Our Achievements
  • Fun Facts&Unique things about yourself.
  • Our professions
  • Location (not exact location due to privacy issue)
  • Our Favorites Things
  • Some useful links.
  • Write in Regional languages
  • Add local area’s things, dishes, spots, historical places and many more!!!
  • Add culture and Festivals.(if you are foodie and the festival is related to your food).
  • Try to make short, sweet, crispy, spicy profile information, so it’s saves time for reading. And The benefit is most of the people will like it.
  • And Lastly, Which things we are writing in our profile information, that’s all are true and jenuine. Don’t write false and don’t show off to other people.
  • Maintain Your privacy.

We can write short profile information based on above points, we select some points and write, no need to write all the things, additional information will be not appreciated.

One important note;

We can write up to only 200 characters for our profile information.

So, I wrote in my profile information( in both google Maps and local guides connect).

“Simplicity Is My Identity.”

Because it’s enough to describe myself in one Sentence.

@JanVanHaver

Based on my point of view,

I think it’s not advertisement.

Our name and details are not advertisement.

We are local guides, we have own profile information, there is nothing need to do advertising.

If we are good and fit the selection of criteria, then it’s ok.

For selection no need to do advertise ourself.

We need to present ourself in profile information with minimum characters.

I am Replacing Your Word

“Advertising” To new word

“Presenting” Myself.

I am following almost a 35 LGs and Moderators, but there is no one following me because this feature is not working yet , though you announced about it before this post. My profile photo is well informative and very clear. Last, anyone can check my profile link it’s available here in Connect :+1: in my connect profile.

@KatieMcBroom thanks for the tips!

I would add that the use of few “Emojis” would add some colour to your bio, and why not add your nationality flag.

I have my profile link in my signature, feel free take a look! :smiley: :smiley: .

Thanks for the interesting concepts @JanVanHaver .

That’s really helpful. But I have a problem with this option. I’m able to follow some of my fellow guides on maps. But no one is able to follow my profile. My profile is not restricted. I don’t even see that option in my personal settings. I’m attaching a screenshot of my settings here. I hope you can help me so that my fellow guides can follow me. @KatieMcBroom
