When we talk about comfort food, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? For me, as a Local Guide living in Indonesia, the answer doesn’t involve fancy restaurants or expensive ingredients. It’s right there, sitting quietly on my kitchen counter: a simple, banana-leaf-wrapped block of fermented soybeans we call Tempe(h).
In celebration of World Tempeh Day on June 6th, I am thrilled to join Tempeh Without Borders: The June Tempeh Marathon, initiated by our sister @Velvel in collaboration with @doc_dells. To support this incredible #MONOLOGUE challenge, I want to take a moment to appreciate this humble superfood. It is versatile, packed with history, and honestly, a total life-saver on my busiest days.
Need a good reason to fall in love with tempeh? Before continuing, make sure to read Tempe(h) Without Borders: Why it considered as a Medical Marvel by @doc_dells. Her medical perspective is the perfect proof of how powerful this humble food is. I’m pretty sure it will convince you to start consuming tempeh and even inspire you to participate in this challenge!![]()
Let me take you through a comforting monologue of what landed on my plate.
The Perfect Crunch: Flour Fried Tempeh
Nothing beats the sound of fresh tempeh hitting a pan of hot oil. I decided to make some thin-cut, flour-battered fried tempeh, or what locals love to call flour fried tempeh.
As you can see in the photo above, I fried them until they reached that perfect golden hue. It’s crispy on the outside, but still soft and savory on the inside. To elevate the experience, a side of sweet, spicy soy sauce dip with crushed bird’s eye chilies is mandatory. One bite, and all the stress from work just melts away.
The Raw Texture: Something Textured and Spicy
If I want something with a bit more kick and a raw, rustic texture, I always go for Tempeh Penyet or a coarsely mashed tempeh mixed with fresh long beans and plenty of traditional spices such an aromatic ginger or sand ginger.
Take a look at photo above. This isn’t just about the heat; it’s about the beautiful contrast between the nutty flavor of the tempeh and the fresh, crisp crunch of the greens. It’s an explosion of traditional flavors in a single bowl, a recipe passed down through generations that never fails to hit the spot.
The Ultimate Comfort Feast
Finally, lunch is served! When everything comes together on a single plate, it looks like a masterpiece of everyday life.
As captured in photos above, I paired the spicy mashed tempeh with a mound of warm white rice and some savory squid cooked in its own black ink. It’s a plate full of deep, rich, and contrasting colors ; black, white, green, and golden brown.
Every spoonful of this meal reminds me exactly why I fell in love with being a Local Guide. Sharing on Google Maps is so much more than just dropping a star rating on a restaurant; it’s about sharing the soul of our culture. It’s about letting the world know how a humble ingredient like tempeh can cross borders and bring pure, honest comfort to our everyday lives.
How about you? Have you ever tried tempeh in your country, or do you have a favorite local ingredient that always reminds you of home? Let’s share our stories in the comments below!
