Dear Local Guides Community,
Concluding my heritage tour of Narnaul, I now would love to walk you through the structure popularly known as Birbal ka Chatta in Narnaul. If you’re a history buff or an architecture enthusiast, this site is a must-visit.
The Real Story: Chhatta Rai Bal Mukund Das
While locals fondly call it Birbal ka Chatta, historical records reveal its actual name: Chhatta Rai Bal Mukund Das.
Built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (17th century), this grand haveli was the residence of Rai Bal Mukund Das, who served as the Diwan (Prime Minister) of Narnaul. The association with Birbal is likely a folk legend.

Architectural Grandeur
The building is a masterpiece of Mughal-era residential architecture.
-
Five-Storied Layout: It is a massive five-story structure, though its exterior might seem deceptively simple.
-
The Underground World: It features extensive underground chambers (tehkhanas). These were designed to stay cool during the scorching Haryana summers and are said to have once contained a complex system of fountains and marble floors.
-
Design : You’ll find beautiful pillars, marble carvings, and spacious courtyards that reflect the opulence of the Diwan’s era.
Current Status & Restoration
The Haryana Archaeological Department is currently spearheading a major restoration project to bring this monument back to its former glory. Scaffolding and active conservation work are common sights right now.
Pro Tip: Be cautious when exploring the underground levels! These chambers are still home to a significant population of bats.
Visitor Information
-
Entry Fee: Currently, entry is free (subject to change post-restoration)
-
Timings: Generally open from sunrise to sunset.
-
Wheelchair Accessibility:
Due to narrow staircases, and uneven stone flooring, the upper floors and underground chambers are not wheelchair accessible.
