Dear Local Guides Community,
I recently visited Narnaul, a sleepy, lesser known town in the state of Haryana. Not many are aware of the town’s rich heritage and history. In this series, I’m presenting a few historical places in Narnaul which are of prominence.
Jamal Khan Tomb
Located Inside Subhash Park
Perched on a rocky mound, the Chor Gumbad is a welcoming sign for travellers, it’s located right at the entrance to the town. Hence it has earned the privilege of being the face of Narnaul.
The Architecture :
'Deceptive Appearances ’
It is a typical Tughlaq Era monument, with ‘S’ shaped arches and sloping walls. Many Tughlaq Era structures appear to be 2 stories from the outside, while on the inside it is a soaring single chamber. Typical example of deceptive appearances. Inside the tomb, there’s no signs of a grave anymore.
The History :
Very less is known about Jamal Khan except that he was an Afghan and a powerful noble during the reign of Tughlaq ruler Firoz Shah Tughlaq (1351-88).
Preserving the past :
Restoration work being done on the outside of the tomb
When I visited the place, it was heartening to see that restoration work was in progress to restore the tomb to it’s historical glory. It was undertaken by the Haryana Archaeological department.
Chor Gumbad : The Moniker
The place got it’s unique name as sometime during its past it was used as a hideout by thieves, hence the name Chor Gumbad.
An ancient Ganesh temple nearby
Visitor Information :
Timings : It is open from sunrise to sunset all 7 days of the week
