Very little is known about the history of Wicklow Abbey. Some historians say it was never even an Abbey to begin with, all that is known is that it was built in the 13th century by the local franciscan Monks. To make things short the “Abbey” was confiscated during the dissolution of the Monasteries between 1536 and 1541 by Henry the 8th. It was later used as an Armory and a Courthouse before finally falling into ruin in the 17th century.
The Abbey Ruins are located a short distance away from the main street in Wicklow Town and they are situated within the grounds of Parochial House. You are free to walk around the ruins. The Wicklow Abbey is one of many religious ruins in the county of Wicklow that I will be adding here, I hope you all have enjoyed what I posted so far.
Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos with us, the area looks incredible and full of history!
Was this your first visit to this place? Is there a guide who explains and provides information about these ruins to the visitors?
I’ve read in your post that this is a free walking area, does this mean that there is no entrance fee in order to access the ruins?
If you like reading about the photography section on Connect, here is a nice article that you might like: You can always have a look at Please Read: Posting on “Photography” Board.
Hi @BorrisS glad you like the photographs. To be honest I only visited these ruins for the first time 2 years ago when there was a Christmas Market set up on the grounds. There is a sign within the grounds with historical and architectural information related to the Abbey. There are no official tours available sadly.
There is no entrance fee and it can be accessed via the gate from the main road.
