The Royal Museum in the Mehrangarh Fort of Jodhpur

The Royal Museum inside the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur is a must-visit place in Rajasthan.

I was there last year. It is housed in one of the Mahal or royal chambers of the palace. This structure is entirely made of red sandstone and no wood is used.

The walls are decorated with fine carvings in stone. And also the windows have Bangla styles arches which are the signature style all over Rajasthan.

This is a Hookah - meant to consume and serve tobacco for the guests.

This is an exquisitely carved model of railways and a railway station in Ivory - Unbelievable…!

The horse buggy in the front is made of silver - a classic example of the fine art of the Marwar region of Rajasthan.

Marwar was a large, independent trading princely state.
They had their coinage system, some of which is still preserved in the Royal Museum.

These are some of the costumes used by the royal family of Jodhpur.

Inside the fort, they have made a bronze model of the entire fort.
I explored the entire fort by taking a photo of this model, then finding my way around.

:high_speed_train: How to Reach

• Autorickshaws or shared Tuk-Tuks will take you to the fort from Jodhpur city center, and as usual, they haggled with me over the fare, so I started with one-fourth of the quote and ended up paying half of the demand. On my second trip last month, I took my car to the fort, where there are plenty of paid parking spaces.

This place also has a rooftop restaurant with an amazing view of the Mehrangarh Fort.

:gem_stone: Audio guides are available at the museum and throughout the fort, for which the ticket should be purchased at the entrance.

:gem_stone: Tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed inside the fort premises, so you can very well leave them behind in your cars or your hotel.

:gem_stone: Carry plenty of water as you have to walk a long distance in the huge area and the climate around Jodhpur is dry even in winters. It can get a bit warm in the summer.

The Royal Museum is located inside the Mehrangarh Fort and has huge ramps.
Besides that, there are audio guides to aid the differently-abled.

Mehrangarh Fort is truly one of Rajasthan’s crown jewels, and your descriptions brought the Royal Museum to life. The red sandstone architecture and intricate carvings reflect the incredible craftsmanship of the era — and the Bangla-style arches are such a unique touch of Rajasthani heritage.

This is an absolutely stellar post, @TusharSuradkar sir! You’ve genuinely raised the bar for how to present a museum visit.
The way you’ve woven together stunning visuals with such comprehensive, practical details is truly impressive. From the historical context of the Mehrangarh Fort and those incredible artifacts like the ivory railway model and the silver horse buggy, to the crucial logistical information on how to reach, where to stay, and even accessibility features, you’ve covered every single aspect.
This isn’t just a story; it’s a meticulously crafted guide that provides immense value to anyone planning a visit. The “Quick Facts” and “Monument Tips” are particularly helpful, and detailing the haggling experience for auto-rickshaws adds a touch of relatable realism.
Thank you for putting together such a high-standard, informative, and engaging piece. It’s a fantastic resource!

Thank you @Annaelisa

As a tailor, my father sews that tiny dress for my young daughter, though the cloth is not so exotic as the royal ones

In India, the men have all adopted western outfits, but the women continue to use the same attire that was used 100, 200, 500 and even 2000 years ago. The tradition remains. Men use the traditional attire on special occasions like fetstivals.
