The Early Glow of Diwali in Pune’s Markets | Supporting Local Businesses

Hello LGs,

Following a market walk on Lakshmi Road as a get-together last Sunday, it was family time for Diwali shopping.

You can already feel Diwali in the air as the festive spirit spreads over Pune’s markets. A stroll down Kumthekar Road, Laxmi Road, or Raviwar Peth and Tulshi Baug is a story in itself, with shops shouting with gleeful exuberance, piles of diyas burning under yellow bulbs, and colorful lanterns hanging from every corner.

The spirit is strong, despite the fact that it is a little early for the big rush. You see families buying gifts that would soon brighten their homes, ladies bargaining over sarees, and children choosing their favorite lights.

Knowing that every diya, handmade toran, and small purchase you make here helps to fulfill a local dream is what makes this experience distinct. These small vendors anticipate the holiday season all year; their talent, diligence, and hard work deserve our recognition and appreciation. Buying from them is more than simply a shopping experience; it is a way to spread happiness, light, and wealth to the neighborhood, which is the true essence of Diwali.

As I walked through these lanes, the mix of chatter, laughter, and devotion felt both nostalgic and heartwarming. Pune’s markets are already brimming with Diwali spirit—one handmade product, one hopeful smile at a time.

Cheers!

How is Diwali celebrated in Kolkata? Is it as big as Navratri?

Yes Dada @AjitThite

In Kolkata, Diwali is celebrated with the same spirit and grandeur as Durga Puja — but with a distinct Bengali twist. Here, the local Bengali community observes Kali Puja, dedicating the night to the worship of Goddess Kali. Magnificent pandals, much like those during Durga Puja, come alive with lights, music, and devotion.

Meanwhile, the city’s non-Bengali residents celebrate the festival as Diwali, performing traditional Lakshmi-Ganesh Puja in their homes and business establishments, accompanied by lamps, sweets, and fireworks.

The blend of these two traditions makes Kolkata’s celebration uniquely vibrant and culturally rich.

@ReshamDas @Shaunak or @PritishB can tell more about the Kali Puja in Kolkata.

Yes, it is fun and energetic when there is a small crowd.
As Diwali approaches, it will become increasingly crowded and difficult to navigate. However, the festival atmosphere keeps you energized and smiling. @Annaelisa
