The Bog (a natural carbon sink) / Turf cutting

Many a day I spent on a similar location, it is tough work but fulfilling all the same, these days are coming to an end, what do you think?

Hi @Peadar

Thanks for sharing.

Keep in mind that not all photos can be shared on Google Maps. All photos should clearly show the place. To me it looks like this is not showing any places that are eligible to have a pin as a place of interest on Google Maps.

Apart from that is looks like a nice photo taken on a wonderful day.

Cheers

As a newbie, please correct if I’m wrong, this picture is not posted on maps only here on LGC

Hi @Peadar

You know if this has been posted on Maps or not.

Here on Connect we strive to share information related to Google Maps so I found it relevant to mention that this photo should likely not be shared on Maps.

All the best

Hi @Peadar , what does your question refer to? What do we think of your photo? What do we think of your experience? What do we think of your post?

Photo: in my opinion a step forward, to remove the road seen below, would have made your photo better. A good habit for a photographer is to look at all the edges of the image before shooting, to avoid including elements that can disturb the main subject. What is the subject of the photo? The cultivated field, or the panorama?
Experience: I don’t know what to say. What does “I spent many days in a place like this” mean? What are you referring to? To the cultivated field, or to the panorama?
Post: Honestly your post says little or nothing. This is a worldwide community, and from your post we cannot know what exactly you are talking about. Including a Google Maps link to the location and an explanation of what you are showing would make this conversation easier. I recommend you read “Your guide to Connect” , the introductory Guide of the community. In there you will find all the necessary information to know how to better contribute in here.

Do you have a doubt about how to do something? The Help desk is here for you, with a long list of post with detailed indications on how to post.

Which kind of contents we share in the community? What are Connect topics? will give you an explanation

Hi @ErmesT , thanks for the info, maybe I should have explained picture better, it is of a roadside bog taken from a moving vehicle, when the peat in a bog is cut & brought to the surface to dry out in Ireland we now call it turf, this is used as fuel in an open fire or stove to produce heat in winter time. As bogs are natural carbon sinks I can’t see this practice being allowed for much longer so a picture like this you will not get in the not to distant future. From a quick google search:

“How much carbon is in a bog?

It is estimated that a 15cm thick layer of peat contains more carbon per hectare than a tropical forest. Peat covers over 20% of the landscape in Ireland and is estimated to store over 1,000 million tonnes of carbon. Carbon capture is essential to life on earth.”

Not any more but many a day I spent in a bog & trust me it’s back breaking work, I hope this brings more clarity to the picture & thanks again for the info

Yes, that makes sense, now that you’ve explained it, @Peadar . As you can see, “a picture is [not always] worth a thousand words”. I wasn’t aware of this, and I agree with you that it should be a prohibited practice, at least within the EU.
I imagine that there are many commercial activities behind this, for harvesting, processing and selling, and that deciding to ban all this could have a heavy impact on them, is that true?
My advice, if this was the purpose of your question, is to make an edit to your post, so we can open a conversation regarding this. To do this, you can read Edit your post - Why and How To

Providing a link in Google Maps of the area also could help. We are a worldwide community, and trough a link in Google Maps we can learn more about the world.

Is this what yo are referring to?

@ErmesT ,Commercial turf cutting & the sale of turf is banned here since 2022 & rightly so, however if you own a bog you are still allowed to cut for personal use, it is a way of life for a lot of people especially on the west coast, that said young people have no interest in the bog as it’s back breaking work so it will eventually fizzle out over time, the government are actively re-wetting bogs to bring them back to their former glory as carbon catchers. I dropped a pin on maps at the exact location picture was taken but can’t share it here, any ideas on how to?
Your dropped pin was a perfect example

Thanks
