The Black Sea Day in Mykolaiv

Dear Local Guides,

I would like to share with you my experience of attending a regional environmental event during the Black Sea Day in Mykolaiv, Ukraine.

Especially it was exciting to me, because I was involved in this event not as a scientist and researcher. This time I was invited as a Local Guide, the Connect Live 2018 Summit alumni and had a great opportunity to share about Local Guides Program and amazing Global Local Guides initiative Local Guides Clean The Worldproject by @ErmesT .

The environmental sustainability of the Black Sea is vitally important for the whole surrounding region and, in general, for the Earth’s ecosystem.

The Black Sea is the inland sea of the Atlantic Ocean basin. The major rivers, such as the Danube, Dnipro, Southern Bug, Rioni and a number of small rivers supply the Black Sea. The area of the Black Sea is about 430 thousand square kilometers. It’s home to more than 2.5 thousand species of animals and fish. The flora is represented by more than 270 species of multicellular algae and at least 600 species of phytoplankton.

The Black sea is bordered by Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, Russia and being affected by strong anthropogenic impact. It therefore the Black Sea basin has a wide range of environmental issues:

  • pollution by hazardous chemicals,
  • plastic pollution,
  • anoxic zones,
  • overfishing,
  • invasive species.

And speaking of plastic pollution, the most part of marine litter is plastic packaging - 83% of bottles, plastic bags, candy wrappers. According to studies carried out in Ukraine on the Danube and the Dniester, the major rivers carry to the Black sea from 6 to 50 items of litters per hour. Microplastics found in sediment both on the shelf and at a depth more than 2 thousand meters. Pieces of plastic from 2.5 centimeters to several microns very easily migrate along the food chains and have a negative physiological effect on animals (Research data by EMBLAS).

The Black Sea Day was started in 1996, when the six Black Sea Coastal states (Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, the Russia, Turkey and Ukraine) signed the Strategic Action Plan for the Environmental Protection and Rehabilitation of the Black Sea to act in concert to assist in the continued recovery of the Black Sea.

The main theme of this day is the Black Sea environment and its protection. On this day, there are activities to inform the general public about the environmental problems, the current ecological status and actions to improve it.

So, scientists, ecologists, local authorities, environmental volunteers, civil society activists, teacher and students gathered in the Mykolaiv regional universal scientific library on 12 October 2019. The attendees discussed the results of modern maritime research of the environmental state of the Black Sea about the global chemical pollutants, the effect of climate change and new invasive species, learned about modern research tools of the environmental health of the sea, summarized results of the EU/UNDP project the Environmental Monitoring in the Black Sea (EMBLAS-Plus).

The EMBLAS-Plus project aims to recover the Black Sea environmental sustainability. It’s focused on marine data collection and activities targeted at reduction of marine litter, education and public awareness creating.

Traditionally most of events of the Black Sea Day were concentrated in Odesa and Kyiv. Indeed, it was really exciting to attend such event in my home city Mykolaiv - the coastal city of the Black Sea on the South of Ukraine.

During the Black Sea Day I had a great opportunity to share a presentation What is the Local Guides Program, my experience as a Local Guide and amazing initiative of plastic pollution control Local Guides Clean The World __project__launched by @ErmesT in 2018 and nowadays covered the whole World. I gave detailed description of the CTW project 5 Steps: 1-Education, 2-Documentation, 3-Actions, 4-Publication and 5-Best Practice. Each step I illustrated with amazing examples of Local Guides activities in this field.

I answered questions about Mymaps of plastic pollutionby @DavidTito which clearly demonstrates a global scale of the Local Guides Clean The Worlds initiative. Listeners were impressed by enthusiasms of Local Guides, who are supporting CTW project actively @KarenVChin @IlankovanT @KashifMisidia @OmerAli @Cecilita @ShafiulB @AnaLuciaWine @Hannah_Ishola and the others.

It was valuable experience of knowledge exchange, establishing connection and planning with scientists, ecologists, volunteers, civil society activists in the field of environmental protection of the Black Sea.

Thank you,

Jane

OMG @JaneBurunina , congratulations

This is simply amazing. I am blushing now, but on the other side I am very happy that the world start to talk everywhere about the importance of caring, as it is the first step of awareness. Caring about the place where we live.

I had the opportunity of a speech, on 2019, on “100 hours for the environment”, an event coordinated by @AntonellaGr , where one of the subject was the impact of the climate change on the North of the Adriatic sea. It was impressive to see how the climate change impacted in the life of the sea. I am Tagging @Kwiksatik here, because I know she’s interested in this subject, and @KashifMisidia , as I saw him on your photos.

Yeah, the t Mymaps of plastic pollutionby @DavidTito is becoming, day by day, more impressive.

I am also surprised about how big is the feedback that I am receiving about Save the date: March 6 is: M’illumino di meno (I enlighten me less) , that is already covering five continents.

Thank you for caring, thank you for loving

Thank you @ErmesT for your warm words, they mean to me a lot!

Indeed, MyMaps of plastic pollution by @DavidTito shows that Local Guides together are changing our World.

We live in the Black sea basin region. Definitely, caring about the Black sea environment is caring about the place where we live. I shortly described here main issues. Facts are shocking. Now, the Black sea is around two times more plastic polluted than the Mediterranean. Microplastic is everywhere…

Totally agree with importance of knowledge exchanging and sharing for creating awareness. I’m thinking about knowledge sharing with clean up meet-up. I have positive experience with collaboration with local schools. We are waiting for warm weather here.

Exactly impressive enthusiasm of community! So many Local Guides joined “Save the date: March 6…” Can’t wait to see recaps, photos and videos!

Hugs from Ukraine,

Jane

Wow @JaneBurunina , We are proud of you :+1:

You were invited as a Local guide there, and represented there whole community of Local guides. And showed how local guides are fighting against the problem of pollution, specially plastic pollution on the beaches and oceans. It was all really fantastic :ok_hand:

Thank you so much for tagging me with the names of such great local guides and my mentors, that is honour for me.

Shukriya  for that :ok_hand:

What shocked me last year, @JaneBurunina , was discovering that the fish population of the upper Adriatic has completely changed in a few years, due the the climate change. Is it the same for the fish population of Baltic sea?

Really the Baltic sea have more plastic than the Adriatic sea? This is shocking too, as in my mind the seas of the North were expected to be cleaner than a closed sea like Adriatic. OMG

@ErmesT

I can’t tell you exactly about the Baltic sea now. I think Northern sea are not so much impacted due to cold climate conditions, high responsibility of EU countries to environmental issues and its proximity to the Atlantic ocean.

But The Black Sea is the inland sea with high transport activity and huge human impact. There are a lot of pollution sources from different sides. For the Black sea we always have invasive species and anoxic zones impact. Due to climate change, the Black sea water’s temperature is growing. That brings Hydrogen sulfide rising from the sea bottom… creating anoxic zones…

That’s my fault @JaneBurunina , sorry :disappointed:

Yes, the conditions of the Black sea seems to be very close to the one that we are suffering on the Mediterranean sea, as the Black sea is a kind of extension of the Mediterranean sea, with a lot of traffic and an high human impact. I do remember the conditions on the South side, in Samsun, along the Turkish coast.

As for the seacoast, I observed various pollution intensity in different seacoast parts in Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria.

Due to the low salinity of the Black Sea, there is no such diversity of flora and fauna. For example, octopuses and squids do not live in the Black Sea.

@JaneBurunina Sad to know that ocean is getting polluted due to plastics which are going to stay for decades. Even micro plastic fiber enters to the food chain damage not only to the marine life but also to the human as well. Ocean has become the top of the list of Eco systems to be protected. Your #LGCTW initiative to support to protect the precious black sea is awesome. Also I’m glad that you tagged us to this post as well. A big thank you from me.
