The Benin Heritage

I love sharing the Benin Heritage, things that paint Benin City in its true light. Benin City is the capital of Edo State in the Niger Delta part of Nigeria. Benin City has a good road network and I help to add or edit places. Little wonder why in 1691, the Portuguese ship captain Lourenco Pinto described Benin City as a place where “all the streets run straight and as far as the eyes can see.”
Benin City has a rich history and it is probably Nigeria’s greatest empire. The first storey building to have been built in Nigeria was built at Ughoton, Benin by the Dutch in the year 1718, and it was called The Factory. The oldest church in West-Africa, Holy Aruosa was founded by the Portuguese missionaries in Benin City. The oldest market, on record, in the history of Africa, is Ogiso market and it is in Benin City. The first bank to have been established in West Africa was Owigho and was built in Benin City by Oba Eresoyen. Benin City is surrounded by massive walls dug by Oba Oguola in 13th century and Oba Ewuare I in the 15th century. And Benin City is the first city to have a semblance of street lighting in the world.
These proud histories are the reasons I am passionate about adding and editing places, checking for facts, writing reviews, sharing photos and answering questions so that people can decide for themselves where to go and what to do.
