The 7 Vintage Mosques in Jakarta

Jakarta is consist of different people, with different ethnic and religion from all around Indonesia. One of them is Islam. Few of historical building around Jakarta are mosques. Not many people notice this, because these are not common tourist attraction. Jakarta government manage to conserve this historical building. Jakarta has 26 old mosques, but in here I write the best 7 in my opinion, and I have already visited!

These mosque have the same name, but infact different location. Both, made at the same day, 22 June 1527. That was the day Fatahillah arrived in this land after won the war againts the Portugal. So, that date was pronounced as Jakarta Birthday. The mosques has different kind material, but almost same design.

(1). “Si Pitung” Al Alam Mosque, Marunda, Jakarta Utara (1527)

The originally, the mosque was surrounded by the sea, si Pitung spent so much time in Masjid. In this mosque, there is a well with three flavour: original, salty and brackish water. Kind of hard to visit this place with car, cause there is no road for car.

(2). Al-Alam Cilincing Mosque (1527)

https://goo.gl/maps/DQbU14VTu9q

The Second mosque, Al Alam Cilincing, built in the same time, that’s hard to believe, but that is the fact. The mosque also built beside the sea, and the unique fact, the mosque wall was built with woods and bamboo. If you came to this mosque, it is near the road, and has parking lots. That is very convenience.

(3). AnNawier Mosque

An Nawier Mosque was built in 1760 by the prophet Muhammad SAW descendant. The mosque itself became the symbol of ARAB civilazation in Jakarta. The Mosque has 33 concrete pile. I saw this is well maintained by the people surround mosque. The uniqness of this mosque has a tower like light house.

(4). Angke Mosque

https://goo.gl/maps/TYx75BWcmYC2

Angke Mosque was built in 1751. The location is in the middle of suburbs. This mosque was noticed, some document about Jakarta declared that this is the oldest. I assume they never found the Twin Mosque! The story behind the mosque is beatiful. The mosque was built my the Balinese who converted to Islam. The main signature still exist, It is the combination of Bali, Dutch, Java and Chinese architecture.

The old mosques in Jakarta were built in Indonesian style architecture. Slowly changes occured. Some of the vintage-modern architecture mosque below are worth to visit.

(5). Al Azhar Mosque

Al Azhar was built in 1958, It built with the school complex beside it. They named it ‘Masjid Agung’. It was the biggest Mosque in Jakarta at that time. In 1960, The Great Mosque became the Al-Azhar Great Mosque following the suggestion of Mahmud Shaltut, from Egypt. Al Azhar is a beautiful white mosque. It is easy to find, since it is in the main protocol, there is Trans Jakarta Station and MRT station nearby. My son goes to the school beside the mosque. ?

(6). Sunda Kelapa Mosque

Sunda Kelapa was the first mosque in Menteng area, Built in 1970. It was named base on the Sunda Kelapa Harbour. The architecture of the mosque is not like other mosques, there are no Dome, no Stars and Moon Symbol, the building like a ship, as the symbol of Sunda Kelapa Harbour. It has various facilities, such as Air Condition, nice and thick carpets, playground for kids, ballrooms, and many others. It also near the Trans Jakarta bus station.

(7). Istiqlal Mosque

The last mosque, is ISTIQLAL. Means Independence. The first president, Soekarno initiated to build this mosque. So he held a competition through the Architect community. Claimed as the biggest mosque on South East Asia. Istiqlal beside the famous church, Cathedral. It held weekly pray attend by important people, cause it also near the president palace in Jakarta. Istiqlal mosque is a glamorous and prestigious one. Istiqlal has 7 entrances, Each door is named after one of the 99 Names of Allah.

After all, my research and journey visiting Jakarta Old Mosque has not finished yet. It always kind of fun, exploring Jakarta in unique way. Jakarta will always fascinate me. My City, My Jakarta.

Really nice post @Ddimitra

I like to see the different mosques. The pictures are all from outside.

Especially the Christian Catholic and Orthodox do not like if you take pictures inside. They maybe only accept.

How is it with a inside photo of the mosque? Is this excepted?

Regards

Hi @TorM

Thank you for stop by!

I took a lot of photos. Some of it, without permission. As long as you took the photos not during Prayer time.

I took from outside, inside. I record videos. And also took 360 photos

Even though I met difficulties when visiting old mosques around Jakarta. One of them, was not allowed women to go in. I was not allowed taking pictures.

I don’t recommend that mosque on my list, since they don’t have the flexibility.

But Jakarta has long lists of beautiful old mosques. So I just move on. Hahahhaha

Thank you @Ddimitra @PaDeSSo for your answers.

I have been in my life in some mosques as well. Only most of them in Europe are quite new. There are countries like Bosnia Herzegovina who have a long Islam history.

What humans in mosques or churches have sometimes created shows me, that art is somehow a present we received from God…

This is inside the Marien Church in Kraków in Poland:
