standards for corner rounding?

are there any standards for corner rounding?

  • when should corners be rounded?

  • how many nodes to use for rounding?

Great question.

I have not seen any guidelines on this. My personal opinion is to use enough nodes so it looks good. I think a soft 90 degree corner should have maybe 4 nodes to look nice

I have seen corners with a lot more nodes, but it is a pain when you need to change or move such corners.

Maybe others have a better answer fot you.

i have seen many different ways of mapping corners - no rounding, 4 nodes, 10 nodes… it would be great if some standard could be proposed, agreed, and published, so that maps look more consistent.

is there a place where such standards could be defined?

I’m sorry, @ncc_65420_b

Google very rarely will communicate on such issues and there is as far as I know no place where such guidelines or recommendations are shared or published.

I take that you have already checked the help pages and the Maps Support forum.

Maybe @ErmesT remember something relevant on this.

Cheers

Morten

Ps It might not be possible to have a Guideline on this as road turns can be sharp or bend only softly and hence need more nodes.

so, if Google does not have a standards documentation area, can we create one in local guides connect?

Hi @ncc_65420_b , “Welcome to Connect! If this is your first visit, you’ve come to the right place. This is the first of the information that you will find in “Your guide to Connect” , the introductory Guide of the community. In there you will find all the necessary information to know how to better contribute in here.

Your questions are interesting.

- when should corners be rounded?

The drawing should follow the shape of the road, without adding an excessive number of points. Add a point only where it is really needed. A corner should be rounded only when it is not an intersection with another road (partial drawing). Here below you can see an example of rounded corner (Green) and not rounded (Red)

- how many nodes to use for rounding?

There is not a standard. The reasons for not having a standard are various, and I will try to summarize them here below:

  1. The scale available for the edit can vary from place to place. In fact the resolution of the satellite images is not the same everywhere. In some place we can reach an amazing resolution of 2 meters, and in there it is possible to draw very detailed corners. In other locations we may have to draw a road with a resolution of 20 meters. In this case we will be barely able to drow a corner with three points.
  2. The Ai that analyze our edits also corrects our drawing, rounding corners and roundabout. The AI can add points with a resolution that is extremely high, and impossible to draw. The AI can also correct a node rounded by mistake, or in a previous approval, if an intersection is added. A post is under preparation about this feature

In conclusion, you don’t need to be worried about that, because the drawing will be corrected by the AI, it doesn’t matter if you draw the corner rounded or not. What is important is to follow the correct shape of the road.

I marked the reply from @ErmesT as the solution as he explained very well how the AI makes it unnecessary to have a Guideline on this.

All the best
