Hi Local Guide Connect Community and welcome to Cambodia Community Spotlights 2025

I would like to share my experienced ot my travel to some attrative destination in Sihanoukville or Kampong Saom.

Kampong Saom is the former and alternative name for the Cambodian coastal city and capital of Preah Sihanouk Province, which is officially known as Sihanoukville (or Krong Preah Sihanouk).

2 Lions or Golden Lions Roundabout is the iconic of the city. This is arguably the most famous and recognizable landmark in Sihanoukville. It serves as a central point in the city and a popular photo spot, symbolizing strength and prosperity.

  • Current Name: Sihanoukville (Krong Preah Sihanouk). It was renamed in honor of the former King Norodom Sihanouk.

  • Location: Situated on the Gulf of Thailand in southwestern Cambodia.

  • Meaning of Kampong Saom: The name translates to “Port of the Moon” or “Shiva’s Port.”

  • Significance:

    • It is Cambodia’s only deep-water seaport.

    • It has grown into the country’s main center for coastal tourism, known for its beaches like O’chhea Teal Beach, Otres Beach and Sokha Beach, and its nearby tropical islands (like Koh Rong).

  • Accessibility: It is connected to the capital, Phnom Penh, by National Highway No. 4 & Express Highway 4 and is serviced by Kong Keng international airport at Ream.

Sihanoukville is my hometown and my family are all live there. There are a lot of place those I not been visit yet. So, I would like to share the destinations that I had visit again and again when I visited my family.

  1. ឆ្នេររាម Ream Beach is a rustic sand beach located in Ream National Park, near Sihanoukville (formerly Kampong Saom), Cambodia.

    It is known for:

    • Its location within the national park, offering a natural setting.

    • Nearby mangrove forests that are home to various bird life.

I love to visit and waiting to see the sunset there. I have some picture with before and Now for you all to see.

  1. ពយម៉ាចូវ ខេត្តព្រះសីហនុ Sihanoukville Poy Machov is a notable location in Sihanoukville, often described as a tranquil natural area or park that serves as an idyllic escape near the coast. I love to set up my hammock there in the afternoon from 4pm to 6pm evening to see the sunset there.

    Key Facts

    • Location: Poy Machov is situated in the Otres area (sometimes referred to as Otres Beach), which is located about 8 kilometers south of Sihanoukville city center.
    • Atmosphere: It’s known for its lush greenery and providing a peaceful place to relax and enjoy the sea breeze, away from the busier city beaches.
    • Activities: Visitors go there for leisurely strolls, picnics, enjoying the natural scenery, and catching the sunset view (Poy Machov Sunset View).
    • Proximity to Otres Beach: Its closeness to Otres Beach means you can easily combine a visit to the park with time on the white-sand beach. Otres Beach itself is famous for its laid-back vibe, clear water, and is popular for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports.
      Getting There
Poy Machov (in the Otres area) is easily accessible from the main Ochheuteal Beach area:
    • Tuk-Tuk/Motorbike Taxi: The ride takes approximately 10-15 minutes and typically costs between $2 to $5 (always confirm the price beforehand).
    • Walking: If you are near Ochheuteal Beach and feeling adventurous, it is about a 3 km walk, taking around 30-40 minutes.
  2. ឆ្នេរអូរត្រេះ Otres Beach is a famous stretch of beautiful white sand and clear blue water. It has historically been a popular spot for backpackers due to its more relaxed, laid-back atmosphere compared to central Sihanoukville, offering a blend of natural beauty, rustic charm.

    • Location: South of Ochheuteal Beach, divided into sections often referred to as Otres 1 and Otres 2 (the southern section).
    • Atmosphere: While it has undergone significant development in recent years, especially with foreign-funded construction, parts of Otres—particularly the southern end—still maintain a chilled-out vibe.
    • Activities: Visitors enjoy swimming, sunbathing, kayaking, boat trips, and beachside dining, and the area is known for its beautiful sunsets.
    • Vibe: It attracts both budget tourists and, more recently, luxury travelers, with accommodations ranging from small guesthouses and bungalows to newer, larger resorts.
It’s a “must-visit” for many travelers looking for coastal beauty and a relaxed escape on Cambodia’s southern coast.

  1. ឆ្នេរអូរឈើទាល Ou Chheu Teal Beach is a popular and lively beach. It’s known for its long stretch of white/golden sand and a vibrant mix of activities and amenities.
    :beach_with_umbrella: What to Expect
    • Location: It’s often considered Sihanoukville’s main beach and the northern end is sometimes referred to as Serendipity Beach, which is where the main boat piers for island trips are located.
    • Atmosphere: It’s a bustling and developed area. During the day, you’ll find spots for sunbathing and water sports. In the evenings, it transforms into a lively hub with restaurants, bars, and a vibrant nightlife scene.
    • Beach Layout: The beach is quite long. The northern end (Serendipity Beach) is the busiest, while the central and southern sections can be quieter, although there has been significant development along the entire stretch.
      :sparkles: Popular Activities & Attractions
    • Swimming & Sunbathing: The calm, warm waters are generally good for swimming (though water quality can be variable due to the development, so check local conditions). You can rent beach chairs and umbrellas.
    • Beachside Dining & Nightlife: Numerous restaurants, cafes, and bars line the beach, offering fresh seafood, local Khmer cuisine, and international dishes. The area comes alive at night with colorful lights and beachside parties.
    • Water Sports: Activities like jet skiing and parasailing are often available.
    • Island Access: The Serendipity Beach area (northern end of Ou Chheuteal) is a primary departure point for boat trips to nearby islands like Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem.
    • Sunset Views: It’s famous for offering beautiful sunset views over the Gulf of Thailand.
If you are planning a trip, be aware that Sihanoukville has undergone rapid development in recent years, which has significantly changed the atmosphere and landscape of the city and its beaches. Some visitors note that the development has led to a decrease in water quality in certain areas.

  1. ឆ្នេរឯករាជ្យ Independence Beach is another well-known stretch of coastline in Sihanoukville, but it often offers a distinct atmosphere compared to the bustling Ou Chheu Teal. It’s named after the historic Independence Hotel Resort & Spa, a prominent, seven-story building that sits on the headland at the northern end of the beach🏝️

    • Atmosphere: Historically, Independence Beach has been known as one of the calmer and quieter beaches in Sihanoukville. It’s often favored by those looking for a more relaxed, upscale, or private experience.
    • The Landmark: The hotel itself (originally built in the 1960s) is a landmark and the source of the beach’s local name, 'otel bram-pil chann (seven-story hotel), or sometimes “7-Chann Beach” on street signs.
    • Amenities: While it has sections open to the public with small restaurants, bars, and beach vendors, a significant portion of the beach is now part of the private resort property, which offers luxury amenities like pools, spas, and beach service.
    • The Sand: It features beautiful, soft golden sands and relatively clear waters.
    • Modern Development: Like the rest of Sihanoukville, the area around Independence Beach has seen substantial development, including new casino resorts and other properties, which has altered the landscape, but the beach retains some of its exclusive feel, especially near the resort.
If you are looking for a beach that is generally less crowded than Serendipity/Ou Chheu Teal and offers more of an exclusive resort feel, Independence Beach is a great option.

I had an amazing time at Kampong Soam, enjoying the sunset and the sea. I absolutely adore that feeling! Watching the sunset was incredible, and riding the motorboat was a blast. It was truly one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.

  1. Lamherkay Beach (also commonly known as Hawaii Beach or Hawaii Seaview Beach) is a smaller, more traditional beach in Sihanoukville, located about 1.5 km southwest of Victory Beach.
It offers a more local and laid-back feel compared to the larger, more tourist-heavy beaches like Ochheu Teal or the resort-dominated Sokha and Independence beaches.
Here are the key features of Lamherkay Beach:

You have so many beautiful photos from Sihanouk Ville @SengPheng thanks for sharing them with us. However, it makes the post very long. If you can divide the post into part like Part I and Part II it would be very helpful. Non-English speakers will have issue reading the post because of the length and the translation just end abruptly. Overall, Sihanouk Ville is worth a visit.

Thanks for sharing your experience with Sihanouk Ville! It certainly looks gorgeous.. and those sunset photos!!

And I also agree with @Sophia_Cambodia that you need to manage your photo sharing because the long posts are causing problem with the translation tool on Connect. Try creating a collage to fit more photos into a single image or sharing a link to an online photo album! As a general rule, I always try to keep the number of images in a post to less than 10. I hope the advise helps!

Thank @Annaelisa for your interesting of the Roundabout of Lord Shiva and Princess Parvati.

That’s a fascinating connection! While modern Cambodia is predominantly Buddhist, the relationship between Lord Shiva and Princess Parvati (also known as Uma or Devi) is central to the history of the Khmer Empire and its incredible temple architecture.
Hinduism, particularly the worship of Shiva (Shaivism), was the official religion of the Khmer kings for centuries, and Shiva and Parvati were highly revered deities.

  1. The Divine Foundation of the Khmer Kingdom
  • From the Funan Kingdom (1st–6th century CE) through the height of the Angkorian period (9th–15th century CE), Lord Shiva was often considered the supreme deity. The Khmer kings often identified with Shiva through the concept of Devaraja (God-King), legitimizing their divine authority.
  • Shiva was primarily worshipped in the form of the lingam (a phallic aniconic symbol), which was consecrated in the central sanctuary of the grandest state temples to represent the king’s spirit and the axis of the kingdom.
  1. The Temple of Divine Love: Banteay Srei
The most beautiful and famous example of their worship is the 10th-century temple of Banteay Srei (The Citadel of Women or Citadel of Beauty), located near Angkor.

  • Its original name was Tribhuvanamaheshvara (Great Lord of the Threefold World), an epithet of Shiva.

  • Kailash Scenes: Reliefs often depict Shiva and Parvati on their mythical mountain home, Mount Kailash.

  • The combined half-male, half-female form of Shiva and Parvati, symbolizing the perfect cosmic balance of masculine and feminine energy, was also an important subject in Khmer art.

  • Royal Model: The divine union of Shiva and Parvati served as an idealized, sacred model for the Khmer King and Queen, reinforcing the importance of a balanced, fruitful, and powerful royal lineage.
Although Buddhism eventually became the dominant religion, the mythological stories and the iconic sculptures of Shiva and Parvati remain deeply embedded in Cambodia’s historical identity and its most famous archaeological sites.
