Rediscovering Indian Rail Heritage at the National Rail Museum, New Delhi 🚂

Hello fellow Local Guides!

I recently visited the National Rail Museum in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, and was truly impressed by how well it preserves and presents the rich history of Indian Railways.

Spread across a vast 11-acre open-air campus, the museum features multiple full-size engines and coaches, including legendary ones like the Fairy Queen, Fireless Steam Engine, and royal saloons used by Maharajas and British officials. The outdoor display lets you walk right up to these giants, making it a great place for photos and learning.

The indoor gallery is well-organized with detailed exhibits like old signalling systems, miniature railway models, and historical artifacts. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the toy train rides, Patiala State Monorail, and the steam/diesel engine simulators that offer a hands-on experience.

A major upcoming highlight is the new auditorium currently under construction. Once completed, it will host educational shows, screenings, and heritage workshops—perfect for school groups and enthusiasts.

Hungry after exploring? The on-site IRCTC cafeteria, also called Rails Restaurant, offers meals in a railway-themed setting—your food is delivered to your table by a toy train on tracks!

Other amenities include clean toilets, drinking water points, shaded benches, and a small souvenir shop for railway-themed gifts and collectibles.

:three_o_clock: Timings: 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM (Closed on Mondays)

:ticket: Entry tickets and ride passes are affordable and available online or at the gate.
₹50 for adults on weekdays/ ₹100 on weekends
Toy Trains for ₹20.

If you’re in Delhi and want to experience something different from the usual monuments, this museum is a must-visit!

Nice descriptive post, @AmitSharma1507 .

Your clean photos remind me of @TusharSuradkar as he waits patiently for the crowd to clear and then clicks.

Cheers!

Thanks @AjitThite
That was the only option in the previous years.

And, of late, I am using the technique from Google Photos that we discussed during a meetup.
