Recap: [Virtual] August 09, Know Your Connect Moderator- Jesi

From Burgers to Karate: Jesi’s Journey & an August Meetup Full of Surprises

On August 9, we hit the “start” button right on time… and then promptly forgot to hit “stop.”
Just like our July meetup with Adrian, the conversation was so good that we went 1.5 hours overtime — proof that when Local Guides start talking, the clock becomes just decoration.

We had 26 amazing participants from every corner of the globe, making our little Zoom square grid feel like a mini United Nations. :globe_showing_europe_africa::speech_balloon:

:microphone: Spotlight on Jesi – Our August CM Guest

Our star of the day, @Jesi from Buenos Aires, Argentina, took us on a ride down memory lane — all the way back to the photo of a hamburger :hamburger: that changed everything.
That one post blew up on Google Maps, sparking her Local Guides journey and eventually leading her to become a Connect Moderator.
Fun fact: She was just 21 years old when she attended her first Google event — and she hasn’t stopped contributing since!

:speech_balloon: Special Guests – Trisha & Sarah

:japan: @Trishatishu charmed us with the story of how her husband nudged her into becoming a Local Guide. She also revealed that her 5’1" long hair is both a crown and a challenge — especially when it gets tangled during stressful times. Solution? She’s her own hairdresser! :scissors:

:brazil: @SarahKa confessed to a full-blown obsession with the Local Guides program — so much so that she’s been known to slip it into conversations with complete strangers. (Honestly, we all need her networking skills!)

 Passions, Obsessions & Surprises

  • Jesi’s love for Japanese culture is so strong she’s even learning karate :martial_arts_uniform:.
  • Sarah, despite her whirlwind schedule as a producer, always finds time to cook — strogonoff is her signature dish. :pot_of_food:
  • Trisha loves finding ways to bring people together and share knowledge — both online and offline.

They also spilled the tea on their favorite Google Maps and Connect features and talked about projects close to their hearts: sustainability :seedling:, accessibility :wheelchair_symbol:, and building connections (the pandemic made us all pros at virtual meetups!).

:bullseye: Fun & Games

Our signature icebreaker Guess Who? made a comeback!
We flashed three adorable childhood photos of our guests and let the audience guess who was who. The chat lit up with guesses — and plenty of people nailed it. :trophy:

:raising_hands: Special Thanks

A big heartfelt thank-you to @AdrianLunsong, my co-host and partner-in-fun for this series. Your energy, humor, and ability to keep the conversation flowing (even 1.5 hours past the finish line!) make every meetup extra special. :yellow_heart:

:film_projector: In Case You Missed It…

The entire session is now live on the Go Loco YouTube channel — so grab a coffee (or two) and enjoy every laugh, story, and “aha” moment from the comfort of your couch.

:yellow_heart: A huge thank-you to everyone who joined and made this meetup another heartwarming, laughter-filled, and inspiring chapter in our series.
See you next month for more stories, more surprises, and probably… more overtime.

Photos are uploaded here. If you have a photo from the meetup, please feel free to add it to the album.

Thank you for joining us, @Trishatishu . It was wonderful hearing your story as well. I forgot to ask you the other day, is your husband in Connect? You should tag him here to see your progress and achievements. After all he deserves to know the results of his mentorship.

Thanks very much for putting this together @SoniaK and for your amazing guests @Jesi @Trishatishu and @SarahKa !

Apologies for the late reply.. my volunteer work is now completely over!! Yay! So I am going through my notifications!! And also, it was a shame that I couldn’t live stream the chat. I did some checks and it turns out that it was my internet connection had slowed down that day and couldn’t support doing a live stream :frowning: Hopefully, I’ll have better luck in the next session!

No, thank YOU, Adrian, for going through all that trouble! :raising_hands: It’s totally fine that the session wasn’t live — we still had such a great time :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: And hey, there’s always a next one… I’m sure it’ll work out perfectly then! :sparkles:
