Recap: [Hybrid] India, February 28, Maps Master Meetup - Chalai Market, Trivandrum 📌✨

Hy Local Guides, :round_pushpin:

Following our previous challenge in Pattom, it was time to dive into the historic heart of trade in Trivandrum: Chalai Market. As part of the Maps Master Meetup Challenge initiated by @TusharSuradkar, our goal was to bring real-time & valuable contributions to this sprawling wholesale and retail hub.

Meeting Point at Gandhi Park :pushpin:

@SarathUpendran & me wearing Blue local guides t-shirts awarded & sponsored by @RtnArulPrakasamT for participating in #LG11of11.

The day began at 9:30 AM at Gandhi Park, where @SarathUpendran and I met to strategize. Chalai Market is a massive area with a primary main street and a network of connecting sub-streets. Since so many local businesses & communities in our city depend on this market, we discussed how to make our contributions as effective as possible to help people navigate and find exactly what they need.

We decided on a “cross-lane” approach: Walking the main street while focusing our lens and edits on the businesses in the opposite lane. This allowed us to capture clear storefront photos without the immediate crowd interference.

Real Impact of the Maps Master Meetup :high_voltage:

From traditional bakeries :cupcake: and refreshing juice shops :beverage_box: to unique mirror stores :mirror: and vibrant flower shops :rose:, we touched every corner of the market. Our focus was on supporting the small local businesses that form the community of Chalai.

The numbers from our walk speak for themselves:

  • 100+ Local Businesses Supported :handshake: : We added high-quality storefront photos and updated essential attributes.

    • The Need was Clear: Interestingly, 90% of the local businesses we supported had either no photos at all, had been incorrectly marked as closed or were stuck with photos from over 6 years ago! Bringing this data up to date was essential for their digital presence.
  • 14 New Businesses Added :plus: : We added new opened/previously missing 14 local businesses on Google Maps!

  • 11 Corrections Made :white_check_mark: : We fixed 11 incorrect names, locations & categories of local businesses to ensure easy navigation.

  • 6 Reopened Businesses :eject_button: : We identified and reopened 6 businesses that were incorrectly marked as permanently or temporarily closed.

Above mentioned contributions is a collective contribution of me & @SarathUpendran combined.

Chai Pe Charcha & a New Discovery :teapot:

After our mapping session, it was time for some “Chai Pe Charcha”. We headed to Gau.co, only to realize this great spot wasn’t even on Google Maps! Sarath took the lead in adding it then and there & we celebrated a job well done with a wonderful cup of chai :teapot:.

Going virtual with the Community :globe_with_meridians:

At 10:45 AM, we transitioned to the virtual portion of our meetup. It was an honor to have @TusharSuradkar join us as co-host. We broadcasted live from Gandhi Park, giving our virtual attendees a tour of the park and a glimpse into the vibrant energy of the Chalai Market entrance.

A Huge Thank You to Our Virtual Attendees:

@AjitThite, @AmitSharma1507, @EshaHarish, @The_GauravS, @BaludraKrishna, @Kuldip_Patil, @SandeepSagarKola, @Merlin, @Kumaarsantosh, @TravellerG, @TusharSuradkar, @Shaunak, @SonamW & @Supriyadevkar.
