Hi, My Local Guides fellows and the Local Guides team!
It’s about the celebration of International Day of Persons with Disability 2019 and a walk for the disabled community in our country. As an Accessibility Champion, I have so many responsibilities. So me and our another Accessibility Champion @KamalHasnainee did a nice walk with some amazing Local Guides.
Meet-Up Title: Accessible Dhaka - A walk for Disabled Community.
RSVP: https://maps.google.com/localguides/meetup/accessible-dhaka-
We have so many Accessibility Meet-Ups plan and some are announced. This Meet-Up is done with a lot of success and a lot of hope for the disabled community. We are so willing to see a complete accessible map and Google Map shows us the most possibility. It’s being more accessibility then before. It’s accessible for kids, women, old age and also for disability, especially for wheelchair users. So during the Accessibility walk, we focused on these matters to updates Google maps questions and information.
Accessibility advocacy:
It’s one of the main targets of our walk. We directly discussed with the business authority about there Accessibility features. What to updates and what to show to others to enlighten Accessibility to the community. We discussed how Google Maps making the best Accessible features for everybody. Finally about the impact of the accessible Maps.
Mapping Accessibility:
Local Guides are so passionate wherever he/she goes. But an accessibility meet-up is more than everything about updating many features of Google Maps. Adding business information, photos, adding new places, check the facts and updating accessibility information together. We directly visited various places and updated live information on Google maps. We focused on Wheelchair accessible entrance, lift, parking, kids friendly zones, washrooms, and toilets facilities.
Mapping wheelchair Accessible signage:
One of the best parts of our Accessibility walks is to adding Wheelchair Accessible signage with the permission of business authorities to encourage the disabled community. We marked many places where we found Accessibilities. We also encouraged business authorities to show and promote their accessibility facilities by adding all accessible signage. Because we noticed, they have accessibility facilities but they are not aware of marking these with accessible signage. We always try to show others the impact of mapping accessibility for our country. Accessible signage can easily inform us which is accessible and which facilities are available.
We did many accessibility meet-ups so we have a different experience in dealing collecting information, managing business authorities in a positive way during our walk. So like others, completed our Accessibility walk without any inconvenience but we got everyone support.
A list of some places we visited during the walk.
This walk is a part of Worldwide Accessibility walk- WAW and Let’s Map Accessibility Campaign in Bangladesh.
