Recap - 28th Accessibility Meetup in Pune - Public Toilets

Public toilets are a great relief, no pun intended, for people in Pune who venture out on foot for various reasons like casual walking, jogging, to the market, or to work.

Unlike in Delhi, people in Pune do not aim anywhere along the roadside.

Ever since the lockdown has ended, Pune is opening up in phases and people are increasingly visiting various places and are in need of public toilets. In the smart city zones of Pune, there are several good-quality toilets in every neighborhood.

During this meetup, various public toilets in Pune’s Aundh-Baner-Pashan areas were visited and the following was checked:

  1. Accessibility of the main entrance.
  2. Availability of ramps at the entrance.
  3. Accessibility of the men and women sections of the toilets.

The following SBM public toilets were visited:

  1. SBM Toilet Bremen Square

  2. SBM Toilet, Aundh Road

  3. SBM Toilet, Sutarwadi

Here are the findings:

1. SBM Toilet Bremen Chowk

2. SBM Toilet, Aundh Road

Both the ladies and gent’s sections have a ramp for accessibility.

  1. Elsewhere

The Indian squat-style comod is also accessible via a leveled-flooring.

One of the most accessible western-toilets commode with a railing was seen in this toilet.

Conclusion

The various toilets in this part of Pune are fully geared towards embracing the differently-abled and though there were a few discontinuities, helpful people were always available nearby to ease the experience of the differently-abled.

This meetup was conducted as part of the Accessibility for All movement.

This was an uncommon but interesting and important meet-up @TusharSuradkar . In venues of my meet-ups, I always try to highlight the washroom facilities for disabled people. You took all the photos nicely. Thanks a lot for sharing this.

Thank you @MukulR

I had done a public toilet accessibility-check meetup last year in Delhi:

This was the Pune edition

Are these paid, because in my country, some toilets are paid? @TusharSuradkar

The public toilets in India are mostly free @Gezendunyali including those seen in the pics.

There are a few toilets that are paid as well but these are rare.

Yes, I join our @MukulR

Dear Tushar ji… You have successfully completed a RARE MEET-UP -

Let me be honest… Most (essay 80%)of the public toilets I have used are very poorly maintained, though government may be paying for the hygiene.

However, during my travel, I use petrol station toilets - most of them are usable… Some are really well maintained.

Also, your photos are contextual…

Thanks for sharing…

Fully agree with you @TravellerG and this is a brilliant idea :+1:

I too have recently come to know that every petrol pump in India is mandated to build and operate a toilet and allow any person on the highway to use it freely even if they do not purchase any fuel there.

I have been using these toilets at petrol pumps to great advantage during my extensive travel.
