World Vegetarian Day and Vegetarian Awareness Month - Part -1.

Veg Food - Idli, its recipe & Benefits - Part -2

Hi dear LG friends,

October 1st is “World Vegetarian Day” - an annual day to promote the benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle and its positive impact on our health and our valuable environment.

Photo #2, Caption: A plate with two Homemade Idlis, Sambar and Chutney - served - ready to eat - yummy?

October is “Vegetarian Awareness Month” and through various initiatives and events, we spread the importance of vegetarianism - to encourage the public to explore plant-based diets for healthier and more sustainable dietary choices. Currently, with the grains fed to livestock for meat production, 1.3 billion people could be fed - did you know this?

Where are we heading to?

Serious “Global Climate Change” hazards? Can Vegetarians help with this?

Answer: Yes, very much.

Plant-based foods use less energy, land, water and other resources than animal-based foods and are more environment friendly. Organically grown crops produce less greenhouse emissions and absorb more carbon from the air, reducing the carbon footprint. Expecting the population to be 9.7 billion by 2050, we’ll need resources from three earths to meet our needs, if we don’t change our lifestyle.

**Fun-Facts - [**compiled from Texas Tech University doc and the Vegetarian Society (UK) doc]:

  • Plant-based proteins produce 70 times less greenhouse gas emissions and use 150 times less land than an equivalent amount of meat.
  • Eating a veggie diet means 2.5 times less carbon emissions than a meat diet.

Who are vegetarians?

Broadly, vegetarians are those who consume non-animal products - it can be vegetables (cooked or fresh), grains, nuts, fruits and animal byproducts, like eggs and dairy, etc. There are also pure vegetarians who will not use even eggs (but use milk & products).

In this series of posts, I would like to bring some of the famous and not-so-famous pure veg-food items (from India), along with their recipes & expected benefits.

Photo #6, Caption: A bowl of Sambar prepared for Idli.

Here, I am selecting “Idli” - a pure vegetarian breakfast/Dinner food which is extremely popular in South India and Sri Lanka. Idli is a savoury rice cake which is a steam-cooked, healthy food. Though there are different versions of Idlis (and brothers & sisters in other states of India), we are discussing the classic Idli and its benefits. Even the WHO has accepted Idli as one of the most healthy foods. And for your information, Indians contribute to 70 percent of the world’s vegetarian population.

In Part -2, we will discuss further details of the Idli, like the recipe (with hints for making soft idlis at home), its health benefits, some of the variants, some more photos, etc. (within a week)

These posts are, in support of the earlier post by our team member, @AnubhaBangia - Here.

Which is your favourite veg food? Have a photo - kindly publish it, please.

Idli Sambhar is one of my favourite foods in South Indian vegetarian food. Offcourse Masala Dosa is my weakness. At one point in time I was having Masala Dosa in my lunch continuously for two years. It was very fulfilling.

Being a vegetarian I love exploring and cooking some of these dishes at home.

Surprisingly egg comes under vegetarian food @TravellerG !

Thanks for enlightenment on vegetarian food and it’s significance.

There are many beliefs behind having vegetarian foods:

  1. Scientific

  2. Environmental

  3. Health and Mental State

  4. Religious

…and many more.

Looking forward to Part 2 for detailed recipe.

Your insights on organically based vegetarian dietary choices are very inspiring. Indeed, it is true, that Idly is a one of the popular food items in South India, liked by people from all walks of life, regardless of their economic background. I wasn’t aware it is World Vegetarian and Veg Awareness Day @TravellerG

Thanks for the same.

The banner photo caught my attention for its ‘Satvik’ appeal.

Veg food is truly wholesome, especially Idli, which can be consumed both at breakfast for a wonderful start for the day - I completely agree with that.

Personally, I like Idli dipped in Sambar, compared to using Sambar as a side dish.

Also, I strongly prefer eating idly with bare hands instead of a fork.

I believe that his creates a connection of the food with our body and mind this way.

Though, I may consume the chutney using a spoon sometime.

What are your preferences in this regard?
