In our third post as part of Connect Moderator @ermest’s challenge “Double the fun - Showcase your country - #TeamChallenge on LocalGuidesConnect,” we talk about travel!
We really hope you enjoyed reading about the Bulgarian cuisine, culture, and crafts. This time, we’ve picked four of our favorite spots to visit in Southern Bulgaria.
@KlaudiyaG raves: “I’ve always loved being around water, so it won’t come as a surprise that one of my favorite places in Bulgaria is located right next to the Black Sea. It’s a town called Sozopol, whose coast, incredible 19th-century Revival architecture, ancient archaeological sites, and long history make it irresistible to tourists and locals alike.
My favorite part of the city is the Old Town where you can find many eclectic shops, great restaurants, historical sites, and artsy bars. The cobbled streets and wood-panelled houses with high stone fences give this place a very romantic vibe.”
@JavieraAu shares: “The Ropotamo Beach is not so popular among tourists, but it’s definitely at the top of my list. Located within the Ropotamo Nature Reserve, between Sozopol and Primorsko, this pristine beach reveals the wild beauty of the region. It’s named after the Ropotamo River which flows through the reserve and reaches the Black Sea еxactly there, on this beach.
The Ropotamo Beach is one of the very few beaches on the Bulgarian coast where you can see the sun sinking into the Black Sea. This is a really rare sight because the sea is our eastern border and it’s unusual to see the sun setting in the same place where it rises.
If you decide to visit Ropotamo Beach, make sure to bring water and a mosquito repellent. If you’re lucky enough, you might also see some of the local wildlife among the trees.”
@FelipePK goes on: “I’ve been attracted to mountains since my childhood years in Brazil. I love hiking and I’ve found that this is one of the most popular activities in Bulgaria. That’s no surprise: the country has several beautiful and extensive mountain ranges. For the past four years that I lived here, I’ve been exploring the mountains and I can safely say that Rila Mountain is one of my favorites.
I recently climbed the highest peak in Rila which is also the highest on the Balkan Peninsula and I enjoyed it so much that I went back and climbed it again! Even though the hike can be strenuous at times, the views from the top are breathtaking. It’s also become a tradition for me to visit the Seven Rila Lakes at least once a year.”
@KatyaL adds: “Except for the beautiful seashore and amazing mountains, Bulgaria is also famous for its over 60 caves. Many of them are part of our 100 National Tourist Destinations.
One of the most unique caves is the Yagodinska Cave, located close to Trigrad in Rhodope Mountains. It boasts a variety of cave formations like stalactites hanging from the ceiling and stalagmites rising from the floor. There are also many pillars, formed when a stalactite and a stalagmite meet and join, as well as delicate cave pearls. The constant temperature there is six degrees Celsius and its full length is ten kilometers. Even though the tourist path inside is just over one kilometer, make sure to grab a jacket before heading in!”
