My photos doesn't show in places on Maps

Hello guys.

Two months ago I’ve noticed that my views counter on photos has been stucked. Recently this issue fixed for most users but I still have a problem with my photos. I realised that when I upload photos and videos to any places it doesn’t show in “recent” tab. Only my videos displaying in it nor photos. Seems because of it my views counter doesn’t work

I double checked it on my wife’s account - and it’s okay. Guess something wrong with my account. Can somebody help me to fix it?

Hello @Ale5ander

Recently this issue fixed for most users…” seems to be misunderstanding. What was declared “solved” in the thread you linked to, was only the graph on the mobile which disappeared for some time. We all* still have the problem, that the view counts change extremely slowly or not at all for most media.

I suggest to follow this long thread and specially the second comment of it.

The long thread was also declared “solved”, but that it was never true, as you can see by all other comments until today. Some local guides even supect, it will stay permanently as it is now, but the very few messages from Google administrators, declare they are working on it. So, you are not alone.

  • When I say “we all”, I mean, I did not read a single comment where someone said, it was solved. :disappointed_relieved:

@Ale5ander

I see that some of your photos get views after a week or so. That is typical after the lingering bug mentioned by @WilfriedB .

Also, keep in mind that your trouble could be related to the spam filter and the fact that restrictions were put in place when your country started a war in Ukraine.

@WilfriedB , @MortenCopenhagen , thank you for your answers. Let me clarify: I don’t see my uploaded photos in “recent” tab in places. Eg:

But I see my uploaded videos in this tab. So it’s not spam-filter. Moreover, my wife and my friend can see their uploaded photos. That’s why I think problem is linked with my account.

Hi @Ale5ander

You wrote “this tab”. Please explain which tab.

When a photos are taken down by the spam filter they will still show in your photo contribution list.

So you could say that the problem is related to your profile as the spam filter is not liking some if your contributions or actions.

You have added 13.419 photos and 847 videos. If these only 11.947 are public. So you will need to study the guidelines for photos again. This is not a bug but something related to your photos and actions.

The spam filter works differently on still photos and videos.

@Ale5ander regarding " I don’t see my uploaded photos in “recent” tab in places."

If you share the link with your wife and/or friend, do they see your photos?

  • If not, that photo was hidden by the SPAM filter
  • If they do see your photos, they are public. If they don’t appear under the “recent” tab, slide the tab bar to the left and the right most tab should be titled “by me” or similar. There you can see all photos, you did post to this place.

regarding “But I see my uploaded videos in this tab. So it’s not spam-filter.”:

Your conclusion ist not correct. The SPAM filter can reject one or more photos/videos, but as long as your profile is not completely blocked, you can still see other media you posted to the same place.

However, if you attach media to a review, all of them and the text will be hidden, if there is only one photo or video rejected or something in the text causes the filter to refuse the review. In that case, it is the best to remove all media form the review, watch if the review is published, then either attach the media one by one again or post them directly to the place (the method, I prefer).

@MortenCopenhagen , sorry for confusing you. I meant “Latest” tab. Just double checked it: most of my photos for past 3 weeks are hidden and doesn’t shown in this tab.

I’m contributing since 2015. Are you sure that your advice to read rules again is right for my situation?

@WilfriedB , no they don’t. In incognito mode I don’t see my photos too.

Thank you for your advice to upload reviews and media separately - I do the same

But problem is unclear for me. What I do wrong? And what should I do to get back my photos on Maps?

Hello @Ale5anderIn incognito mode I don’t see my photos too.” is the prove, each single photo was hidden by the SPAM filter. The rules may change over time (therefore Morten’s advice is correct), but also the AI is permanently learning or might make mistakes too. Unfortunately, users who purposely post fake information are also learning how to bypass the filter.

But is not always the individual photo causing to be hidden, it seems the filter is more often considering all of our uploads, for example watching for duplicate or similar photos at the same or other places.

Personally, I gave up to investigate, why exactly a photo got hidden and delete it immediately, because the amount of hidden media might play a role too. However, in some very few cases, I was successful by cropping am image to remove a recognizable face, some text in the picture or even a traffic sign. But I found it is not worth the effort and rather make more photos to choose from. But if you want to understand, you need to study each of the hidden photos individually.

One example, I noticed recently:

Even though pictures of menu lists are appreciated (even though text on the photo can always cause problems), it is difficult to get a menu list approved, which contain photos of individual dishes. Since several months, I was not able publish any lists of ice cream parlors, which usually contain a photo besides the description.

Hopes this helps.

@Ale5ander

You have 1319 hidden photos/videos. This is not normal. So the spam filter is not liking something you do.

Sometimes we see a block on all new photos, but this is not your issue.

I saw some redundant photos from you. Check your photos at https://maps.app.goo.gl/jDkMJfNgbdmrTm9t5 and at

https://maps.app.goo.gl/Pch1eyJh7bKLobJ99

I would recommend that you upload only the best and not as many photos to each place.

Please use the form called Account Investigation for contributions not visible on Google Maps if you believe that some of your contributions have been wrongfully unpublished. Keep in mind, it takes several weeks for the check to be done, and you will not be notified about the result, so I suggest you check the status of your reviews once a week or so.

Best of luck
Morten

@WilfriedB , thank you for sharing your experience with photos

@MortenCopenhagen , lol, on Summit 2017 Googlers awarded a user that uploaded few TB of photos to Google Maps.

Thank you for link to the Google Form.

@Ale5ander reg “… awarded a user that uploaded few TB …

I don’t think the storage size matters, but rather the number of media items for a single place. That might indeed indicate a change of the Google’s policies, since very recently, they limited the number of photos you can upload at once from the desktop to ten (even though you can upload batches of ten at least twice  ).

I have also the impression they look more frequently at duplicate, similar or redundant media.

@WilfriedB , yesterday I found interesting thing: if I try to upload my recent photos to Google Maps (recent = took in past few days) it will appear in “Latest” tab.

Photos which we discussed previously has been taken in autumn 2023.

Make a test. There are free tools available that you can use to manipulate the date in photo metadata. Try that and see if the problem photos will go public. I doubt it. Also, please remember to delete the previous copy before uploading the manipulated copies.

Cheers

@Ale5ander thanks for the feedback, but I also doubt the date played a role, but it doesn’t hurt to give it a try as Morten suggested. Who knows …

In the past, i was able to upload older photos, after making sure, they still reflect current reality.

A free tool to change the date is “EXIF Date Changer”. I did use it to set the dates for scanned slides and negatives. Also Geosetter can do that besides many other things.

Having said that, if the photo is older than a couple of weeks, no wonder if it doesn’t appear under “latest”, but you (and other) should see it under “All”, resp. you should see it under “By me”.

Btw. the desktop always shows month and year, the photo was taken, while the Android app shows the date of upload.
