I welcome you, local experts! It’s Eugene Trydchykau, from Minsk, Belarus. And today I’m going to tell you about the non-obvious feature of Google Maps, which turns a local expert into a “local spy”.
I mean, the “Share location" feature. Using this feature, it is possible to share your location on Google Maps with other users. You can choose the duration of the sharing (for example, for 1 hour or even forever), as well as specific contacts for whom your location will be available.
Why would this be useful? In addition to parental control, you can use the “Share location " feature while traveling. In a foreign country, it is better to stick together, and if you are alone – Google Maps will tell your friends your location. How do you like it?
You know, that’s what happened to me. My friends and I were vacationing in a small tourist town Lviv, Ukraine ??. And I happened to walk around the evening bars alone. Friends could check my movement using Google Maps since I had shared my location with them.
But you can imagine my phone went dead so they lost me, drunk. Then my drink was spiked, I was robbed, and left in a local Park. Robbers even took off my sneakers, damn it!
Yes, a dead phone in such a situation is a real irony! But that’s why Google Maps “Spy Games” are the most interesting thing I’ve done as a local expert. I recommend this feature to all travellers.
