I don’t make much edits now, as they rarely get accepted.
especially when it comes to reporting duplicates places. I assumed google waits for certain number of reports before merging two places.
Following are some recent examples
Tried to create a new place, a school, which I figured was important landmark even for tourists like me. The pictures clearly indicated name of school and it’s vicinity. It was not accepted
Second was report of duplicate place. A college for boys, which had two places on maps. It’s still pending
Finally the third one is change in Open Hours on Saturday. I had uploaded pictures showing the schedule as proof . It’s pending aswel since last week.
How do I improve quality of my work. Maps have data of my movement as it suggests me pictures of these places when I open those . But yet my edits get rejected.
Hi @Xyan.ryil
As @MortenCopenhagen said, instruction activities are categories that, due to a lot of intentionally bad edits given in the past, are now protected by Google. This includes both the creation of the place and the attempt to merge two listings.
In addition I want to inform you that, as you are reporting an issue, I am changing your category to Google Maps tips & tricks - Local Guides Connect.
For more details about selecting a category and the relevant tags, please check:
Hello @Xyan.ryil I totally understand ; I’ve faced similar issues myself. One of my edits was also about a university that had recently been removed near my office. I submitted the update with clear evidence, but it still got rejected or stayed pending for a long time.
It’s frustrating when you’re trying to keep the map accurate and helpful, especially for places that have closed or moved. Sometimes Google Maps takes longer to verify such changes, or waits for multiple reports before acting.
Don’t let it discourage you ; your contributions matter. Keep documenting with photos, adding context in your feedback, and reporting consistently. Over time, your trust level improves and edits are more likely to be accepted.
I have an interest in this, as I had a recent experience where my photos went “hidden” because the POI became an Unknown Place. Investigation showed that two places had been merged, and all the associated media disappeared. How did an LG so easily merge two places with completely different names?
Another POI disappeared, and when it finally appeared again, the PIN was in the correct location but with a stated address 32 km away. How was an LG allowed to type an address that was not even in close proximity? I successfully edited the incorrect address, but of course, it’s like a new POI now, and all previously uploaded media are gone.
I share your frustration @Xyan.ryil - not due to my edits being blocked, but regarding others destroying my work without them being blocked while doing it.
Well, merging two places is not an easy procedure, as you can read in the post shared by @MortenCopenhagen on his previous reply. It requires time and efforts
This doesn’t makes any sense, @tony_b
Can you write a post about that and explain the steps taken to fix it?
In this way we could go a bit deeper in the issue
Concerning place creation I have coincidentally found an approach which worked quite nicely recently.
1st step is: Go there and bring your mobile device.
2nd step: Take pictures of the place right now.
3rd step: Create place on maps using these pictures while you are still ‘on site’, upload everything immediately, don’t walk to any WiFi, use mobile data.
This seems to be recognized by Google AI as ‘reporting life from the scene’ and then you are ‘credible’.
I did all these steps within minutes and all place creations done this way were accepted. I was on my way, I didn’t have a lot of time, I just noticed that the place wasn’t on maps, did as described, and it worked.
Once when my friend opened a clinic (using mobile data) and then once when I visited a newly opened hotel (again mobile data)
Both time I uploaded handful of pictures with place’s name and other details clearly visible. But it was not accepted.
Its not like my edits never get accepted but looking at how people name lakes and waterfalls after themselves, create a grocery store on a glacier and name their houses on map, makes me wonder how do they succeed (I understand those are basically the reason why it’s harder to edit now).
With the slight difference in the name of the college, do you know with certainty which one is correct? The first step would be to edit the name of the one that is wrong, making both have the exact same name.
