In 1909, on the initiative of the history teacher of the Poltava cadet corps, Ivan Frantsevich Pavlovsky, a museum was opened on the battlefield. In 1981, the Museum of the History of the Battle of Poltava and a complex of monuments connected with the battle were declared the State Historical and Cultural Reserve “The Field of the Battle of Poltava”. The total area of the reserve was 771.5 ha.
In 1994, the Cossack State exhibition, devoted to Zaporizhzhya Cossacks, who fought both on the side of the Russian troops and on the Swedish side, appeared in the museum.
