More Small Town Ontario Murals, Part 5

Finally got back to Midland Ontario and as promised took a photo of the largest Historical Mural In Canada, . It depicts a Jesuit priest and a native from somewhere around the 1640’s. This enormous mural is painted on a grain tower and measures 80 feet high and 250 feet wide. When painted it was the largest mural in Canada, Not any more.

The 2nd photo shows the actual size of the building at the port.

3rd Shows the great lake cruise ships which transported passengers around the great lakes from big cities to small picturesque towns and vacations. Cruise sailing is still a big business today on the great lakes.

4th photo is winter in the harbor, if the ice wasn’t too thick they would use horses to break up the ice so that the ships could get closer to port.

5th photo is the Midland harbour and piers from the early 1900’s

Midland is famous for it’s murals, There are over 33 murals in the town of Midland, I still haven’t found them all, It’s also very famous for its butter tart festival, held every summer.

Butter tarts are a Canadian tradition dating back to the early 1900’. Bakeries today are graded and noted for their home made butter tart, Recipes may include pecans, raisins, walnuts or many more items but the key ingredient is butter.

Here’s a photo of typical Butter Tart

Logging was and still is a very important industry in Canada, The next one is from Gravenhurst Ontario.

The last one and is one of my favourites is from Newmarket Ontario and depicts early trading.

I hope you like them.

Wow @TerryPG enormous alright and beautiful. This is one of the best examples I’ve seen of where street art turns an otherwise ordinary building that one would not specifically look at and turn it into a must see building, for the art of course. The otherwise ordinary Grain Tower certainly stands out. Great pics Terry and I love each of the ,murals but my fave, for the reasons above is the Grain Tower,

Thanks @AdamGT Last time I was in Midland it was in the winter time and the water was still frozen, so entry on to the docks and piers were locked for safety reasons, I am glad I finally got to see it, and able to take a photo, I wonder how long it took to paint.

Yes how long indeed @TerryPG . I love them all but the Grain Tower to me is the standout. Keep taking great photos Terry and while some of the photos we take may not fit into the Local Guides’ mission, and I have many such photos, down the track and when my to-do-list is not so busy, I have an idea for all such photos and promotion of both the place and the photographer. Small Town, BIG Murals I love it!

@TerryPG Adorei sua postagem! Essa forma de retratar a história em murais é muito interessante, pois é um museu a céu aberto onde todos tem possibilidades de contemplar.

Super shots, very well captured…

I loved the briefing of all ‘Serial Numbeted’ photos.

My first choice is the #1… Biggest Historical Mural In Canada… How did you manage to FRAME it so well?

The wide angle view of the Grain Tower also is interesting…

Another one is “Early 1900s”…sharp…

Enjoyed each shot very well…

Wow @TerryPG .

Thank you for sharing. :blue_heart:

The butter tarts looks so tasty, I wish I could reach through the screen and just eat one.

Your photographs of the murals look amazing- and I especially like the second photo where the mural peers over the lake. I also liked how you incorporated history. I got to learn cool tidbits of facts that I never knew- such as how horses broke up the ice. :green_heart: Great share as always!
