Milky Way near Aspen

We were up in Aspen at the beginning of the month and I was hoping to shoot the Milky Way over the Maroon Bells from the Maroon Lake amphitheater but the reality is there is never a time when the core of the Milky Way is ever visible from that vantage point…I found this alternate location instead…its at the end of Castle Creek Road (same roundabout that you use to go to the Maroon Bells but different exit from the circle)…Its a fabulous location…just be careful about the deer as you drive in–especially at night–also a great place for a day hike as there is almost no foot traffic on the hiking trail (at the end of this road) especially compared with the zoo of people at the Maroon Bells slogging their way up from Maroon Lake to Crate Lake

Such a beautiful shot @BillMathe how did you take photo, I mean what phone or camera did you use to capture such a clear shot?

Hi Sophia,

thank you for your kind words! This is a long exposure image, taken with my Canon Ra mirrorless camera (a camera that comes from Canon that is optimized for astro photography) + Sigma 14mm f/1.8 prime lens + Peak Design travel tripod. Exposure time was 30 seconds, f/stop 1.8, and ISO 3200 with all post-processing in Adobe RAW. Its really not too technically challenging…finding the good dark sky spots with a nice foreground is the trickiest part.

Cheers

Bill

Hey @BillMathe welcome to the connect buddy :handshake: . Is this is the real place? You don’t need any telescope to see milky way just go there and see this heaven , i really love it . How’s your experience here ? I wish I could visit this place in future. Please go through from the link provided by @SholaIB .

Thanks and have a nice day  .

Hi @Mukul_Anand

thanks for catching my goof up on the previous reply to @Sophia_Cambodia

And yes this is a real place…we have lots of great “dark sky” here in Colorado where you can see the Milky Way just like this!

And thank you for your kind words about this image…I’ll be posting more of my favorite places to take Milky Way pics.

Cheers

Bill

Great photo @BillMathe and nice gear the Canon Ra. I normally prefer photos in landscape but can understand why you have taken this in portrait.

As you have seen, everyone here are keen to help you and it’s great to see that one of the very first things you did on joining Connect was to read @KatieMcBroom 's Your guide to Connect article.
