Recap of the Hybrid Meet-up at Clock Tower, Dehradun
A unique hybrid meet-up that brought together enthusiastic Local Guides both in person and virtually took place on Saturday, February 22 at 6 PM IST. Myself and Anuj attended the in-person event, which took place at Dehradun’s famous Clock Tower, while other attendees participated virtually.
Anuj Bhai, an experienced local guide who has worked for Google since 2000, was introduced formally by me.
Long before the Local Guides program formally began, Anuj traced his early engagement with Google’s indexing and mapping activities, sharing his inspirational path.
After then, I gave an in-depth overview of the significance of the Clock Tower. We highlighted its historical significance as a location where British authorities hanged freedom fighters to death during India’s fight for independence, as well as its distinctive characteristic of having six clocks. Additionally, participants could hear the hour being marked by the distinctive ringing of six bells, a custom that is still followed today.
A knowledge quiz about clock towers in Pakistan and the UK was held to add interaction to the program. Chocolates were given to the winners, which made the event more enjoyable. In addition to increasing participants’ understanding, this activity encouraged excitement and community involvement.
The meeting finished with a discussion about the necessity of maintaining local history and recognizing the contributions of freedom fighters.
All Attendees expressed appreciation for the opportunity to connect and learn, and plans were made for future gatherings to share information and experiences.
