Local murals art in Ontario, Canada. part 4

First a little about the property. This was the original bus station for the city of Oshawa, It was built in 1992.With the advent of less and less Bus travel and the opening of the Go train service to Toronto, the Bus terminal closed in 2018 and is now slated for redevelopment.

Recently they filmed some action shots of the hit TV. series Reacher in the building.

Hope they keep the murals.

The artwork and murals were Commissioned in1996 and is a tribute to General Motors.

Please remember these are all painted on concrete panels.

The above panel illustrates members of the McLaughlin Family, founders of the McLaughlin Carriage Company and McLaughlin Motor Car Company, which eventually became General Motors of Canada.

The above panel shows GM’s car 7 symbols, Can you name them? Buick, Saturn, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac.

The workforce Diversity is illustrated on the third panel through the use of gender, race and age.

As the state of technology increased , car designs changed as shown on the fourth panel and the use of computers and computer programs increased.

The Crash Test Dummies found at the GM South Plant are painted on the fifth panel.

The loon found on the sixth panel is seen at the GM Canada Headquarters, at the McLaughlin Bay, or the 2nd Marsh project. This was GM’s commitment to the environment.

The seventh mural came from an actual letter and enclosed photograph. It shows three generations: a grandmother, a mother, and a granddaughter, standing proudly in front of their new “Sunfires.” Which I understand where all delivered on the same day. They wrote GM expressing how pleased they were with their new cars.

In the final panel painted are two examples of the cars produced in Oshawa: the Buick Century and the GMC Pick-up.

I do hope whatever happens to the old Bus Station they somehow keep these murals.

Please remember these are all painted on concrete panels.

Amazing murals @TerryPG and it looks like a lot of thought went behind creating them. I wondered if they were all created by the same artist(s). Out of the set I like the Safety panel mural most and wondered how many times each of those dummies died! In terms of the Diversity panel, I got 2 out of 7 right LOL. I totally agree with @PennyChristie , I hope the murals get to stay there for a long time.

Thanks @PennyChristie and @AdamGT I do hope they keep them,

The property is valuable right down close to the main 4 corners of the city, I Understand negotiations are on going right now and I will keep you informed.

Adam they were all painted by the same artist John Hood.

@TerryPG ,

Thank you for sharing this and taking the time to research the history of it.

Thank you @Rednewt74 for the kind words.

That’s a ton of history painted on those walls, it’d be a shame if all of this was just discarded. The ‘innovation’ panel is showing some age, however. I mean, how many people still wear ties to work? :joy:

Thanks for walkin’ and snappin’ for all of us, @TerryPG !

Thank you @JustJake Totally agree and I am going to follow what happens to the building, I’m sure the murals will be kept but I want people to see them and not have them buried somewhere at G.M Corporate headquarters.

Did you ever wear a tie? I can’t remember the last time I wore one. People in the 1970s -90 always did and of course earlier. I think the last 5 photos are from these years.

I’m most surprised that these murals are potentially in jeopardy @TerryPG

Their historical value is certainly greater than their artistic value, but I appreciate that they have a vintage look.

My favorite would be the one of three generations of Sunfire buyers - How cool to have your photo memorialized in a mural!?

Nice find and share.

@TerryPG Arizona has a pretty loose tie (pun intended) policy for work attire due the horrendous heat. Many silk ties were probably ruined before we finally gave up.

@TerryPG Again thank you for sharing street art from Canada with us. I find the painting style quite different form what I’ve seen so far in Europe or USA. It’s great there are so many various murals all over the World.

Thanks again @Annaelisa The talks are still going on between the Developer and the city, but I hope the outcry from the public will cause the saving of this art and moving it somewhere else. I hope…
