Local Guides Movers & Shakers

T100 Movers (1).gif

Introduction

The Points, Photo Views, Star Photos and Country leaderboards regularly posted here on Connect are quite long and detailed. Recently, some of these also included the reintroduction of what were previously referred to as the Movers & Shakers leaderboards. These leaderboards, first introduced some two years ago in fact it was back in October 2021 (see here), listed the top Local Guides actively contributing and achieving by different metrics including points, photo views and star photo views. However, as they were being buried deep in the long and detailed aforementioned leaderboard posts, this didn’t do justice and sufficiently highlight these top Local Guide contributors. So, as we fast approach the 3-year anniversary of the Top 100 Local Guides leaderboards, I decided to split the movers & shakers out into their own post, with more innovative extensions to these to come.

The Movers & Shakers leaderboards are by no means perfect because of course there are different guiding opportunities in different countries and cities etc, but they do give us some indication as to who are the Top Local Guides out there pounding the pavements guiding and impacting on their community by way of their contributions, more points and of course more photo views and brighter star photos. So let’s highlight those top Local Guides out there pounding the pavement and guiding!

If you’re not listed in the Movers & Shakers leaderboards and believe that you should be then you can make this happen by registering and it’s simple to do, just hit this link. If you want to know more see this excellent How-to post by @AZ_2021.

Reading the Movers & Shakers leaderboards (June 2023)

Briefly, this is what you need to know about the leaderboards in this post. For more details about the Top 100 leaderboards see the leaderboard documentation:

  1. Simply stated, the term Movers & Shakers in this post is used to describe the Local Guides that have achieved the most in terms of overall Local Guide points, photo views and star photo views over the past month. Therefore, the leaderboards in this post indicate how active each participating Local Guide has been over the past month as well as the performance of their photos and star photo in terms of views over the same period.

To explain the different metrics used in the Movers & Shakers leaderboards we will use the following simple example. Sarah, a Level 8 Local Guide, uses the T100 System and updates her data on the 28th of each month. For simplicity of explanation, she updates her data every 30 days! The following table summarizes her key data as at 28 April and 28 May::

    Data 28 April 28 May
    Points 20,000 24,000
    Photos 860 900
    Photo Views 15m 16.8m
Star Photo Views 4.03 million 4.06 million

    (a) The Delta Points is the value of the points earned by a Local Guide over the past month. In this way, Sarah’s current Delta Points is 4,000 [ 24,000 - 20,000 ]*.

    (b) The % Delta Points is the value of the points earned by a Local Guide over the past month expressed as a percentage. Therefore, Sarah’s current % Delta Points is 20% [ (4,000/20,000)*100 ].

    (c) The Delta Views is the absolute value of the total photo views gained by a Local Guide over the past month. Thus, Sarah’s Delta Views for that month is 1.8m [ 16.8m - 15m ]*.

    (d) The % Delta Views is the value of the total views gained by a Local Guide over the past month expressed as a percentage. Therefore, Sarah’s current % Delta Views is 12% [ (1.8m/15m)*100 ].

    (e) The Delta Views/Photo is the average photo views gained per photo by a Local Guide in the past month and for comparative purposes, this gives a simple measure of the overall quality of a Local Guide’s photos in terms of views gained per photo; the higher the Delta Views/Photo the higher the quality of the photos! Therefore, Sarah has a current Delta Views/Photo of 180 [ 1.8m/900 ].

    (f) The Delta Views/Day is the average photo views gained per day by a Local Guide in the past month and for comparative purposes, this is another metric that gives a simple measure of the overall quality of a Local Guide’s photos in terms of views gained per day; the higher the Delta Views/Day the higher the quality of the photos! Therefore, Sarah has a current Delta Views/Day of 60,000 [ 1.8m/30 ].

    (g) The Delta Star Views is similar to the Delta Views however in this case, it represents the views gained over the past month by a Local Guide’s most viewed photo, or star photo. Therefore, Sarah’s Delta Star Views is 30,000 [ 4.06m - 4.03m ]*

    (h) The Delta Star Views/Day is simply the average Delta Star Views per day over the past month. Therefore, Sarah’s star photo has a Delta Star Views/Day of 1,000 [ 30,000 / 30 ]. This metric gives a simple up-to-date measure of the quality of our star photo in terms of views gained per day*.

  2. If you are a participant in the Points, Photo Views, Star Photos and Country leaderboards and haven’t updated your data in the previous month and in time for the leaderboards posted here then you will obviously not be included in the Movers & Shakers leaderboards.

  3. If you registered in May and are thus a new participant on the Top 100 Leaderboards then you will not be included in the Movers and Shakers this month simply because you do not have a prior month’s history.

  4. If you updated in your contributions data in the previous month but not in the month prior to that then you will also not be included in this month’s Movers & Shakers because your Delta Points would be across more than one month and this would unfairly distort the idea behind the Movers & Shakers which looks at the points and photo views movement (i.e. the delta points) in the one month.

  5. In summary, the Movers & Shakers leaderboards only include those Local Guides who regularly update and have especially done so over the last couple of months. It’s all about creating that level playing field and comparing apples with apples.

  6. Where shown, around leaderboard sequence numbers indicate that this is the Local Guide is a new participated on the Top 100 leaderboards.

  7. An asterisk (*) shown after a Connect Username indicates that that Local Guide is a Connect Moderator.

  8. Double asterisks (**) shown after a Connect Username indicates that that Local Guide is a Googler.

  9. Selecting any of the Connect Usernames will take you to that Local Guide’s Connect Profile.

  10. Local Guides included in the leaderboards must check their entries for any errors. If you should find any errors or omissions, please add the details in a comment on this post.

    • Please note that making comparisons using metrics such as delta points and delta views must be done carefully. In my view it is better to use points per day or views per day for comparative purposes and you will find these in the Core Vitals section of the T100 System!

You will recall that last month I commented on Level 6 Local Guide @jackson 's star photo (see here) and mentioned that I couldn’t wait til June to see the delta views of Jackson’s star photo of Walt Disney World® Resort. Well here it is a whopping 13 million+ delta views. That’s just a crazy number but once again goes to show that you don’t have to be a top gun Level 10 Local Guide to rack up amazing view counts.

Of course, not far behind at 8 million+ delta views is Level 7 Local Guide @SvenJacobs ’ star photo of Grand Central Terminal. Also as mentioned in my previous comment, these great examples also show that while such popular POIs usually have many thousands of photos added on Maps, which makes it more difficult to gain the coveted feature photo of the location, it is still possible!!!

Now time did not permit me to include metrics like the % Delta Points, % Delta Star Views and Delta Star Views/Day. However, in the case of % Delta Star Views and Delta Star Views/Day I have a feeling that these metrics might well give us some indication on whether our star photo is becoming or has already become a red star  So this is a good metric to watch each month!

Ah, I love this board @AdamGT . It gives the truth about how little my red star was viewed in the past month.

Apologies for my comment in the other Star Photos Average Views/Day thread.

No need to apologize @tony_b and I’m really pleased that you found and like the new Movers & Shakers boards and as you say, they give a much better picture of what is currently happening about our star photo  Once again, watch out for the forthcoming enhancement of the Vitals in the Star Photos Analytics section of the T100 System’s VIP lounge

@AdamGT another awesome effort!

I appreciate your hard work and time spent.

Thanks for your comment and appreciation @jasoncugs . I’m pleased you like the reincarnated Movers & Shakers boards and my hope is that the new metrics will help us better understand our stars.

Hi @AdamGT

Thanks for sharing these new leaderboards.

Normally, you write a lot of text. So, I feel a bit off asking you to add more

But I think your new leaderboards require the readers to guess how the numbers are calculated, and what they can tell us.

Regarding your new leaderboard called

Top 100 Points Leaderboard Movers & Shakers Local Guides (June 2023)

Would it be correct to assume the following:

June Delta points are calculated as points reported in May minus points reported in April.

This number reflects how active you have been in the month of May.

Regarding the new leaderboard called

Top 100 Photo Views Leaderboard, Movers & Shakers Local Guides (June 2023)

Would it be correct to assume the following:

June Delta Views is the number of total photo views generated in the month of May.

% Delta Views are June Delta Views calculated as a percentage of your total photo views reported in May.

Delta Views/Photo is June Delta Views divided by your total number of photos reported in May.

Regarding the new leaderboard called

Top 100 Star Photo Views Movers & Shakers Leaderboard (June 2023) (All participating Local Guides)

Would it be correct to assume the following:

The June Delta Star Views are calculated as your May star photo views minus your April star photo views.

This number shows how many new views your star photo got in May.

Suggestion: Why not also share how many views this is per day? I find that more relatable or something I need to calculate anyhow. The 3 last columns are not really necessary here.

I think your naming of the leaderboards is one month out of sync. I update my stats at the end of the month. So the data updated on May 30th are in my mind the May achievements, but you are naming them “June”. I think it would be more logical for the users if you would also call them May rather than June.

Finally, you may want to consider renaming the 3 new leaderboards for clarity. How about:

Points Movers & Shakers May 2023

Photo View Movers & Shakers May 2023

Star Photo Movers & Shakers May 2023

All the best and thanks for all your efforts

Hi @MortenCopenhagen and thank you for your comments and feedback, always appreciated.

Actually, I did intend to add more details about each of the new leaderboards in the readme section and/or the leaderboard documentation however, caught short of time and keen to get all the leaderboards out as early as I could in the new month, I decided to roll them out and come back and fine tune things later but my first priority is to correct the already reported errors in the leaderboards themselves (for example, see this comment by @OkayNiggo and this comment by @tony_b ). However, having said that, you will find that some of your suggestions have been covered in comments such as here and in the last paragraph of my comment here. It’s all about time. Once I get over things I will tidy this all up.

I do understand the point you are making regarding the naming of the leaderboards. Unfortunately, for a long time now the naming has been related to the month posted. However, as you will know, under each of the leaderboards I always note the date and time that I actually read the data.

Thanks also to your suggested name changes to the leaderboards. I will give some thought to this.

@AdamGT Thank you for doing up this board. It is a really interesting board that should have been done up from the start. Unfortunately, there will always be limitations for this type of leadership boards. It is only valid for people who update their google map data regularly

Summary of a few actual top movers and shakers not in the list

  • The best in USA have a monthly photo views growth of around 334 million views

  • The best in SPAIN have a monthly photo views growth of around 118 million views, apparently this person did not sign up for any of AdamGT leadership boards. If he is in it, he would be the 2nd highest the photo views leadership boards and the 1st highest in the points leadership boards

  • The best in GERMANY have a monthly views growth of around 104 million views

  • The best in SINGAPORE have a monthly views growth of around 73 million views and also unfortunately he did not sign up for any of AdamGT leadership boards

@AdamGT I’ve often thought the same as @MortenCopenhagen about the monthly naming of the Leaderboards, but it certainly cannot be changed at this late stage without skipping a month to avoid consecutive months with the same name. Really it is a choice between publishing who was the leader in May’s activity, or who holds the leadership title during the month of June based on May’s activity. Just two different ways of labelling the same information.

Hi @xmen123wood

What is your source for the data on record holders outside the leaderboards?

All the best

Morten

Hi @xmen123wood and thanks for your comments.

Yes you are right and for the specific reasons clearly mentioned in the readme section, the Movers & Shakers only lists participant Local Guides that update their data.

Also, as you mention, there will be contributors both here on Connect and “out in the wild” that are not participants on the leaderboards but would likely be among the top 100. If you are only interested in rankings then this could be important to you however, as I have so often said, the leaderboards are much more than just about ranking of Local Guides. For example, the System behind the leaderboards includes a number of powerful extensions, tables and charts that can help you better manage, monitor and improve the health and quality of your contributions and the outcomes achieved in terms of points, views and impact on your community and this is what gives the biggest return on your 5 minutes or so investment each month in updating your Maps contribution data. You can read about some of these leaderboard extensions here.

Yes I fully agree @tony_b . The month labelled on the Subject/Title of each monthly post is simply to differentiate them and indicates the month posted here on Connect much like the monthly Introduce yourself posts. In the case of the leaderboard posts, the data is at the date shown at the bottom of each leaderboard.

To @MortenCopenhagen

Apparently the source of the data is from me directly. I have been analysing my google map photo views growth from when I started from 1,734,532 views on the 23/6/23. I have kept records on my own contributions data from then until now. So I am naturally interested in how others grow. Since 17/11/22, I have been trying take note of many local guides data to see how each one grow. However it is a really tedious task so from 7/4/23, I have shrink down significantly to only a few local guides I am interested in, mainly those that have significantly higher views growth than me. For example from 29/11/22 to 22/3/23, your views growth per day is around 948,151 to around 1,172,758 which equates to a monthly views growth of around 29 million to 36 million which is really good. Nonetheless, views growth data is very volatile so it is extremely hard to figure out how much the exact views growth is

Thanks, @xmen123wood

I understand your reply so that the record holders you mentioned are from a sample of Local guides that you noticed and chose to follow their achievements.

I was just curious to know if you had found some to me unknown data source.

You may like to take look at https://lgstats.xyz/guides/116647701492246965139

It is an automated system comparable to the leaderboards. But it has a lot bigger sample. Try to look up yourself. If not included you can prompt the system to also track you.

You can also prompt the system to follow the Maps users you find interesting and the website will do all the work for you.

Cheers

Thank you for the sharing the link. It was an eye opener for me. I did not know that such website existed.

I obtained my photo views growth data from collecting more than a hundred times of my account to generate the a number of graphs. Yet, there was already someone who came out with the method that generate and collate an unlimited about of google map local guides data all in one website.

I actually found myself in the system. Not only did I found myself, I also found the best in america and germany in AdamGT leadership boards. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd highest photos views local guides in my country, Singapore are also in the system. The best in spain and australia is also in it. Which is really amazing

I look at the photo views data for a few of them and they are as accurate as they can be. It is a bit disappointing that it only takes note of data with a max duration of 1 month

However, there are mini flaws to the systems. Many of the local guides are represented by the wrong countries. 1 american is represented by canada, 1 japanese is represented by china, 1 spainish is represented by maldives and the list goes on. I am singaporean but I am represented by malaysia.

I found out that the system only takes note of accounts that are not set as private in google map. That is absolutely reasonable and understandable

In true fact, I just want to change my flag from malaysia to singapore in the system
