Ever wondered why late summer feels extra festive across the globe? ![]()
August sits right at the heart of the world’s peak “season of sovereignty,” a grand, continuous wave of global independence and national days that stretches from July through September! While neighboring months have their own major milestones, August packs an incredible 18 official national days into just 31 days, marking pivotal historic turning points across Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe. ![]()

Why so many? August was a major historical turning point:
-
Southeast Asia’s “August Trio”: The end of WWII in August 1945 created a historic turning point in SEA, leading to Indonesia’s Proclamation Day (Aug 17, 1945), followed by Malaysia’s Hari Merdeka (Aug 31, 1957) and Singapore’s national sovereignty (Aug 9, 1965)! -
The “Year of Africa” (August 1960): Multiple nations like Ivory Coast and Gabon gained independence in a single historic month! -
South Asia’s Historic August (1947): Pakistan and India declared independence back-to-back on August 14 and 15. -
Post-Soviet & European Declarations: Nations like Ukraine, Estonia, and Moldova restored or declared independence late in August, joining long-standing European traditions like Switzerland and North Macedonia.
With so much history and celebration happening around us, we thought: why not bring our global Connect family together to share how we celebrate right in our own hometowns? ![]()
Whether your country’s big day falls early in the month, right in the middle, or toward the end, everyone is warmly invited to share their local stories, bright colors, and delicious festive treats with us! ![]()
August National Celebrations at a Glance
(See image below for the complete breakdown of all 18 countries!)
Indonesia: Red & White Festive Spirit (Aug 17)
Every August, my home country transforms into a vibrant sea of red and white (Merah Putih) to commemorate Proclamation Day on August 17th. Neighborhoods everywhere build decorative archways (gapura) and hang flags along every street. What I love most is the community spirit through lomba Agustusan, fun neighborhood games like makan kerupuk (cracker-eating contest) and panjat pinang (greased pole climbing) that bring everyone together with lots of laughs! ![]()

At the heart of the national ceremony is the historic National Monument (Monas) in Jakarta.
And of course, no celebration is complete without Nasi Tumpeng, a cone-shaped yellow rice dish representing gratitude and togetherness, served with lots of delicious side dishes! ![]()
