One of the world’s oldest non -church cemeteries, it was founded in 1767 during the colonial era. With its Gothic tombs and moss-covered graves, it provides a tranquil haven. The ‘Great Christian Burial Ground’ was one of the world’s first non-church cemeteries, and South Park Street Cemetery was that. Many tombs and monuments of British administration, troops, and their families may be found in the cemetery.

With its Gothic-style monuments and graves infused with the rich flavors of Greek, Egyptian, and Indo-Saracenic architecture, the cemetery is regarded as a significant example of colonial-era architecture. Islamic tombs and Hindu architectural features have also been included in some cases. Numerous monuments in the cemetery have elaborate sculptures, carvings, and epitaphs on them. From modest headstones to imposing mausoleums, the buildings come in a range of sizes and styles and are mostly made of sandstone, marble, and bricks.

Interesting information on South Park Cemetery -
Monuments to the deceased and enormous pavilions with tall, verdant trees are features of the well-kept cemetery.
In South Park Street Cemetery, the majority of the monuments are artistically pleasing and appealing.

Tall tombs, shaded trees, and the relative calm away from the city’s hustle and bustle make it a nice area to go for a leisurely walk.
Wandering around this lovely and serene location will take several hours. Many historical sites and tales to witness are really fascinating.
The Archaeological Survey of India looks for this cultural monument, which is one of Kolkata’s biggest cemeteries.
