KOLKATA HERITAGE SERIES – PART 1 - Metcalfe Hall: A Hidden Gem of Kolkata - History and Architectural

One of my favourite museums in Kolkata. Great place to visit with friends/family, and you’ll get beautiful photographs here.

In the center of Old Kolkata, Metcalfe Hall is a two-story structure that is a tribute to British colonial architecture. This structure, which was designed by city magistrate C.K. Robinson between 1840 and 1844, was erected in honor of Charles Metcalfe, who served as Governor General of India from 1835 to 1838 and is sometimes referred to as the “Liberator of the Press.”
It was initially intended to be a public library, but the Imperial Library eventually moved in.

The Imperial Library eventually moved in, although it was initially intended to be a public library.
The structure is a representation of 19th-century colonial architecture, facing westward toward the Ganges. It has a sturdy basement on which to stand, and colonnades and columns around it on all four sides. Ancient Greek temple architecture served as the model for the building’s design. To support a massive entablature are thirty enormous Corinthian Columns, similar to those in the Towers of the Winds of Athens. Subsequent structures in Bengal were influenced by Metcalfe Hall’s architectural style.

Overview: An iconic example of British colonial architecture, Metcalfe Hall now hosts exhibitions on Kolkata’s cultural and historical evolution. Its Greek revival style stands out in the city’s landscape.

I noticed that the entrance fee is 12.5 times higher for me than someone born in India. What is your opinion on such a pricing policy?

Thank you for this beautiful write-up @Pajamatraveller
