Know A Little More About Surabaya To Explore

SURABAYA

The second biggest city in Indonesia after Jakarta, the City of Heroes, a vibrant metropolitan city with modern skyscrappers mixes with Dutch collonial buildings. I live in Surabaya for over 20 years, actually lifetime. People said Surabaya has nothing to explore, there are only malls. So, tourists usually come to Indonesia to visit Bali, Jakarta, Jogja, or another places where they can find beautiful beaches. Yes, Surabaya has no beautiful beaches, BUT there are so many places, foods, things to explore.

Surabaya is divided into 5 parts, Central, East, West, North, and South. Every part has its attraction to explore. The busiest one is Central Surabaya, because there are a lot of big companies’ office. For east and west Surabaya, they said those are crazy rich Surabayan’s zone, because there are some luxurious properties, real estates, big malls with branded stores inside. The north one is famous with its quay, and the south one is famous with Surabaya Nasional Great Mosque.

CENTRAL SURABAYA

This part is where you can find a lot of buildings from Dutch colonial past and and some skyscrappers building with sparkle at night. Here are some places that must be on your travel list:

  • Tunjungan Street

It’s a commercial area in center of Surabaya. Along this road, so many banks, shopping centers, and hotel. People said “mlaku-mlaku nang Tunjungan” means “walking along Tunjungan street” is must thing to do when in Surabaya.

  • Majapahit Hotel

A luxury-historical hotel where famous tore Dutch flag into Indonesian incident happened. It’s located in Tunjungan Street.

  • Siola Surabaya Museum

It was ‘White Laidlaw’, a building by Robert Laidlaw since 1877. After years through so many transformation, now it becomes a museum with a lot of Surabaya’s historical things.

  • Heroes Monument & 10 November Museum

It is a monument in Surabaya, the main symbol of the city, dedicated to the people who died during the Battle of Surabaya on November 10, 1945. The 10 November Museum is located under the monument.

  • Tunjungan Plaza Surabaya

The biggest shopping center after Pakuwon Mall and the oldest one. Established in 1986, Tunjungan Plaza I - Tunjungan Plaze VI provide everything you need in one place. From low to high budget things, local to international branded.

  • Monumen Kapal Selam

Submarine Monument, a real submarine that is the biggest one in Asia. This monument is actually a Pasopati 410 KRI submarine, one of the Soviet Union’s Republic of Indonesia Navy fleets in 1952.

  • Surabaya City Hall

It is the administrative center of the city of Surabaya. The building was built by Cosman Citroen in the 1920s. You can find out Taman Surya (Surya Park) which is really beautyfull and eyes refresher.

  • Makam Peneleh

Makam Peneleh is one of the oldest tomb in East Java. This tomb is also know as Dutch tomb.

NORTH SURABAYA

North Surabaya also has a lot of historical building, especially around central Surabaya. Beside that, North Surabaya has a quay that frequently some International Cruise Ships anchored. Here are some places you can explore:

  • House of Sampoerna

House of Sampoerna is a tobacco museum and Sampoerna head office located in Surabaya. The architectural style of the main building influenced by Dutch colonial style was built in 1862 and now is a historical site. It’s top tourist attraction in Surabaya.

  • De Javasche Bank Surabaya

It is a bank museum located in Surabaya. It was a branch office of De Javasche Bank Batavia, built in 1829.

  • Gereja Katolik Kelahiran Santa Perawan Maria Surabaya

Also known as Kepanjen Church, it is the oldest Roman Catholic Church in Surabaya, completed in 1899 with gothic revival style of architecture.

  • Red Bridge (Jembatan Merah)

It’s a place you must visit in Surabaya although nothing to do here. It is historic because it was the place where the war between Indonesian and the colonials took place.

  • Arab Quarter

When you visit here, you are gonna feel like in Arab. The vibes, the people, the foods, the fashion are all Arabic. All alleys lead to the Ampel Mosque.

  • Ampel Mosque

This is the oldest mosque in East Java built in 1421 by Sunan Ampel, one of ‘Wali Songo’ located in middle of Arab Quarter.

  • Surabaya North Quay

It’s a Skyscraper rooftop deck offering dramatic views of the port, sea & passing cruise ships, located on the edge of Port of Tanjung Perak Surabaya.

  • Jalesveva Jayamahe Monument

Jalesveva Jayamahe Monument is a Statue of an Indonesian Navy officer wearing Ceremonial Service Dress, complete with his sword of honor, staring far to the sea, located in Port of Tanjung Perak Area.

  • Suramadu Bridge

It is a cable-stayed bridge between Surabaya on the island of Java and the town of Bangkalan on the island of Madura. You can go to Madura easily through this bridge in 20-30 minutes.

  • Kenjeran Park

Kenjeran Park is an area in North-almost-East Surabaya on the edge of Kenjeran Beach with many kinds of attraction. There are Pagoda Tianti, Kelenteng Sanggar Agung (a temple), Atlantis Land (theme park), etc.

EAST SURABAYA

East Surabaya famous with local foods, malls, and cafes. And a lot of big superb house. You must visit this:

  • Pakuwon Food Festival

It’s a place where provides various foods and beverage to enjoy indoor either outdoor. As its name, there is also fun attraction for kids. It’s very good to enjoy at night.

  • Bamboo Forest

It’s kind of bamboo forest in China or Japan.

  • Taman Harmoni

It’s a beautiful garden located in front of the Bamboo forest. This garden has Sakura that you can’t find in other park/gardens in Surabaya.

  • Galaxy Mall

A big mall in East Surabaya that provides middle-high budget things.

SOUTH SURABAYA

The last part is South Surabaya. There is not much places to explore but

  • Al-Akbar Surabaya National Grand Mosque

It’s the biggest mosque in Indonesia after Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta. It has 4 eye-cathching turquoise domes seen from the Surabaya-Porong Highway Road.

  • Suroboyo Carnival Park

A modern theme park with carnival-style offering rides for kids & adults.

  • Suro and Boyo Statue

An iconic statue of Surabaya that you must take a photo with when visit Surabaya.

WEST SURABAYA

This part is where crazy rich Surabayan live. A lot of crazy big luxurious superb house and this place famous with big malls and appartments.

  • Ciputra World Mall

Another luxury mall in Surabaya

  • Citraland

Citraland is modern residential area that adopts the concept and lifestyle of Singapore, and become an independent city. It has schools, campus, gas station, Gwalk (food court), golf area, waterpark, modern market, etc.

  • Supermall & Pakuwon Mall

This one is the biggest mall provides everything from low to super high class.

  • Lenmarc mall

Another mall with high budget things inside

  • Food Junction Grand Pakuwon

This place provides varieties of traditional and modern foods so that it becomes one of the foods heaven in Surabaya.

@sheillyuliani Thank you for sharing a lot information about Surabaya, that’s make me nostalgic about this place. There’s one famous thing about Surabaya, bungkul park and another beautiful park. That’s the plus point of Surabaya I think

@nanik_rf Ah so true! Thank you for adding. It’s Surabayan pride. This parkwas honored as Best Park in Asia of the United Nations in 2013. There is free wifi facility for public. Good place to have a chill.
