Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, Colombo, Sri Lanka

Took this picture when I was walking around the markets of Colombo. I played around with the Lightroom mobile app for some final touches. Pretty happy with the end results. This was built by an ‘unqualified’ architect, but it looks surreal up close! Quite an old building with lovely architecture mixed from different styles.
Do you have any pictures of unique looking structures?

It’s an amazingly decorated Mosque @Ceylon-Tableaux Do the colors have any traditional or cultural significance?

Hi @AdamGT ,

The colour chosen here does not have any cultural significance, but I’ve read somewhere that the architect who designed it did not go with the ‘onion shaped dome’ for the temple, but rather a ‘pomegranate’ shape and decided to go with the colour of the fruit. The architecture however, is based on the Indo-Saracenic style. Since most of the buildings surrounding the temple are either shades of colours leaning towards white, the vibrant red stands out from the rest.

Some claim that it was used as a guiding beacon for incoming ships in the early days of Colombo.

Hello @Ceylon-Tableaux and thanks for your reply. It makes sense and I can see how this strikingly colorful Mosque would stand out situated amongst white opposition buildings.
