Hi everyone!
As Local Guides, we often talk about the food, the lighting, or the service. But today, I want to start a new series dedicated to places where the “service” is an act of empowerment. My first stop is Echoes in Dwarka, New Delhi.
The Experience: Where Silence Speaks Volumes
Walking into Echoes, you aren’t met with the usual hustle and bustle of a Delhi cafe. Instead, you’re greeted with the warmest smiles from a staff that is entirely speech and hearing impaired.
What makes this place special isn’t just the inclusive hiring—it’s how they’ve redesigned the dining experience to bridge the communication gap:
- The Bell System: Each table has a switch that lights up a bulb at the service station to call your server.
- The Coded Menu: Every dish has a code. You simply write the code and quantity on a notepad provided at the table.
- Sign Language 101: They have a beautiful wall dedicated to basic sign language (ISL), so you can learn how to say “Thank You” or “Amazing” while waiting for your food.
What to Eat?
The food doesn’t play second fiddle to the cause. I highly recommend their Tandoori Momos and the Dragon Cheese Chicken Rolls. The fusion of flavors is spot on, and the presentation is top-notch.
Why This Matters
We often see the “differently abled” in back-end roles, but Echoes puts them at the front of the house, proving that disability is never a barrier to excellence. It’s a heart-warming reminder that inclusion isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a way of life.

Continuing the Series: What’s Next?
Since I want to make this a recurring series, here are a few other spots across India I’m looking to cover:
- Mitti Cafe (Bengaluru/Delhi): Run by adults with physical and intellectual disabilities. (Their outlet at Rashtrapati Bhavan is a must-visit!)
- Cafe Arpan (Mumbai): Employs people with developmental disabilities like Down Syndrome and Autism.
- Vitthal’s Kitchen (Jaipur): Known for giving guests a 5-minute crash course in sign language.
- Terrasinne (Pune): A “Socially Conscious” dining experience with speech and hearing-impaired staff.
have you visited a cafe like this in your city? Tag the place below so I can add it to my list!
