How to Report an Incorrect or Inappropriate Road Suggestion on Google Maps (Desktop)

A few days ago, I was looking at the map when I noticed a dotted orange line on the map where it shouldn’t be. Because the line was dotted orange, I knew it was a road suggestion, but it hadn’t been approved yet (I confirmed it was submitted on August 22, 2025, by someone else). Since the suggested road was incorrect, I reported it on October 4, 2025.

I am sharing my experience here for the benefit of everyone.

:warning: Caution: We must double check before marking any suggest a road as inappropriate. Only report the ones that are definitely incorrect on the map.

If you find a similar inappropriate or incorrect road edit, here are the simple steps to report it using your computer:

Step 1: Get to the “Edit the map” Tool

  1. Open Google Maps on your computer’s Chrome browser.
  2. Move the map to the area where the incorrect road suggestion is.
  3. Click the main Menu icon () in the top-left corner of the screen.
  4. In the menu that appears, click on Edit the map (Fig.1)

Step 2: Find the incorrect road

  1. On the left-hand panel, click Add or fix a road (Fig.2).

  1. On the map, move your mouse over the incorrect road suggestion (the dotted orange line).
  2. When you click the orange dotted line, it will turn blue to show you have selected it.

Step 3: Report the Problem

  1. Look back at the panel on the left side of your screen. A new button should appear that says Report as inappropriate.
  2. Click the Report as inappropriate button. (Fig 3).

  1. A small box will pop up, “This edit will be hidden from everyone on Maps.” .
  2. Click the final Submit button to confirm the action (Fig 4).

  1. You will also notice that the dotted line disappears.(Fig 5).

You are all done! You have told Google that this suggested road is inappropriate, and they will take action. By reporting incorrect edits, you help keep the maps accurate for everyone. You are welcome to share your experience!

Thanks for laying out the steps here, @PrasadVR. Maybe one day we’ll learn the mystery of where these pending long roads that cross the middle of cities are coming from.

Excellent walkthrough @PrasadVR sir, This is super helpful for LGs adding and editing roads on desktop. There are a lot of incorrect roads drawn in Google maps now a days

Great share @PrasadVR :+1: Reporting wrong edits is really important for all of us. Thanks for highlighting this….

Hi @PrasadVR

What are your thoughts about spotting such inappropriate roads?

Are there any ways to systematically finding them? You need to be zoomed in pretty far before any roads show up in the road editor.

Heello @MortenCopenhagen ,

Sometimes I see these orange-dotted roads while looking to add new roads. When I hover over them, it shows that the road was submitted on a specific date by someone else. I am not aware of any systematic way to find these roads.

Thank you for this much-needed post @PrasadVR ji :+1:

I have several roads in my neighborhood on Maps that do not exist in reality or are private roads that cannot be used by the public at all.

@PrasadVR danke für diese Infos, mit dem Smartphone ist diese Bearbeitung natürlich auch möglich und so unmöglich gestaltete Straßen gibt es ja auch als genehmigte Straßen.

I agree with you, thank you for sharing your experience @Annaelisa.

Thanks @PrasadVR. I’ve seen these roads, but never reported any. Now I know how to initiate the necessary action in future.

Thank you for the information. I have seen such roads on the map many times, but I did not know that it was so easy to report them.
