Yes, it’s 2026… and I’m still going on about the 10th Anniversary Scavenger Hunt that was put together for the community by the Local Guides team as part of the celebrations for hitting an amazing milestone in the program! ![]()
I’m back from taking a mini break away from the computer and on re-connecting with Connect
, I noticed that the Scavenger Hunt post was still featured on the home screen.. so out of curiosity, I went on the Let’s Roam app and the game is still running! As in, you can still enter “LG10” when clicking on the “Join a Team’s Adventure”, and the custom made lobby is still there! And you can still create teams, and start a scavenger hunt!
So, I’ve spent most of today putting together a set of game cards that people can use to play a virtual version of the scavenger hunt! In case you missed it, I had set up 3 online sessions towards the end of December 2025 to test out playing a virtual version and was hoping that the deadline to play the scavenger hunt would be postponed so that the game remains available. Oh, and to avoid spoilers, don’t watch the video of our game sessions! ![]()
If you didn’t get the chance to play the game in-person (highly recommended) because you couldn’t find enough players in your area, feel free to set up a virtual session using Google Meet and find global players to join you in a virtual version instead! Please do read the original post by the Local Guides team to get your head around the game and how to set it up.. but also do know that the modified version that I’m sharing below comes with a slightly altered set of instructions.
Requirements & Notes
-
You will need to find Local Guides to form a team of at least 5 players (including yourself). You will be using Google Meet for this virtual session and ideally, you will need to be on a desktop/laptop. Playing on a mobile is very, very challenging because of the need to share your screen and to take photos so I wouldn’t really recommend that.
-
Select a Team Leader. This person is in charge of:
-
hosting the Google Meet call
-
understanding how the game is played and guiding the team members in completing the challenges. This person can also play the game!
-
creating the team in the Let’s Roam app (instructions are in the Local Guides official post). With regards to the team name, I would recommend something like this: Virtual_(Date of the game)_(Team Name) e.g. Virtual_14Jan_WeAreTheChampions.
-
downloading the game cards.
You will be reading out the game cards to your team mate so that your team mates will not need to look at the Let’s Roam app. The game cards basically replaces the challenges on the Let’s Roam app with virtual friendly versions!
Please only open the game cards when you’re in the Meet call and ready to play the game. Do NOT read through them in advance as you are not meant to know what the challenges/questions are before the game!! Also, team members should NOT open the game cards at all. Team Leaders, you can access the game cards here.
-
answering the Quiz questions on behalf of the team i.e. the team discusses the question, decides on the answer and the Team Leader submits the answer using the Let’s Roam app.
-
-
Select a Team Photographer. This person is in charge of:
-
taking the photos and videos throughout the game and submitting them via the Let’s Roam app to complete the challenges.
Please be aware that on some phone models, taking a video does not work, so you may need to ask another team member to take on the role for any challenges requiring videos. Videos are only 15 seconds long which is a very, very short time to try and complete the challenges so team members need to be aware.
To take a photo/video using the Let’s Roam app, tap on the appropriate challenge and click on the camera button. Please note that the app prefers taking photos/videos in portrait orientation. I would recommend adjusting your window size to match a portrait layout so that it’s easier to take a photo/video.
-
-
Select a Team Tracker. This person is in charge of:
- keeping track of all the places used by the team members in answering the challenges during the scavenger hunt. You will log these places into a Google Maps list which will be shared in the recap post. This is actually one of the requirements in the original scavenger hunt although it’s a group effort. I just thought that it’s easier if one person keeps track.
-
You will play the virtual scavenger hunt in the order of the game cards i.e. from Challenge 1 to Challenge 45. In total, there are 45 challenges and you should take 1-2 hours to complete. The challenges are split between Solo, Group and Quiz challenges.
-
Decide on the rotation of team members to tackle the solo challenges. For example, in a team of 5 consisting of Aaron, Betty, Colin, Diana and Eugene, you can decide on an order sorted alphabetically (Aaron
︎ Betty
︎ Colin
︎ Diana
︎ Eugene) or randomly (Aaron
︎ Colin
︎ Diana
︎ Betty
︎ Eugene) etc. It’s entirely on you. Once the last player (Eugene) has completed a solo challenge, the rotation starts again and the first player (Aaron) will attempt the next solo challenge. Having a fixed order makes it simple to know who’s going to be next to do a solo challenge!
-
In Group or Quiz challenges, everyone will take part. But don’t forget that it’s the Team Photographer who will be taking photos/videos (for all challenges requiring a team photo/video) and submitting them and the Team Leader to answer the quiz questions on behalf of the team.
-
You will be using Google Maps and/or Streetview to complete most of the solo/group challenges. I will share an example further below. Team members need to know how to share their screen when it’s their turn (usually a solo challenge) so that the rest of the team members can follow along and be comfortable with switching from a Google Meet window/tab to a Google Maps window/tab.
Also, I would recommend using incognito mode when attempting the challenges so that your person search/maps history or saved locations or personal locations do not appear on screen.
When finding items on Google Maps/Streetview, you are meant to search through and use the photo contributions of POIs to complete your challenge. You cannot use the info found in the POI card.
For example:
Find a place that is child friendlyThis is unacceptable as it’s using the POI card to highlight the amenities.
This is acceptable as it shows a photo upload of a kids menu.
The reason for this is to make it a bit challenging! Otherwise it would be too easy to complete all the challenges! And you’ll soon appreciate how difficult it is to find photos highlighting various things
. -
Team members… everyone needs to pick a location as their game location. This is your designated game area and you will want to choose a place that you are familiar with. Ideally, every game location is unique i.e. no two (or more) team members are playing in the same area. For example:
Aaron = New Delhi
Betty = Bengaluru
Colin = Munich
Diana = Dublin
Eugene = BangkokThe whole basis of this virtual version is that you couldn’t find enough players in your local neighbourhood so the assumption is that your team members will be from different areas in the world
.
Instructions for using the Let’s Roam app
-
Download and install the Let’s Roam app on your mobile
-
Open the app and click Continue
-
Click Enable Location Services: I’m not sure but I’m hoping that it’s not an issue that we are physically located far apart from each other. We will soon find out!
-
Click Enable Notifications: Notifications are not necessary for game functionality
-
Click Get Started
-
You do not need to create or sign into an account. Click Skip (It’s right at the bottom of the screen; see screenshot below with red arrow pointing to the Skip option)
-
Click Join in the lower right corner, then click “Join A Team’s Adventure”
-
Enter the Team Code: LG10, then click Join Team
-
You will be asked for a name. Enter your Connect user name with the @ sign e.g.
@AdrianLunsongand then click Sign In. -
You will see your ‘profile’ page. To proceed, you will need to enter a Last Name. Please enter your Country as your Last Name, and click Continue.
-
You should now be seeing the LG10 Scavenger Hunt lobby page as seen in the screenshot below. Click on Join A Team.
- Enter your team name in the search bar (ask your Team Leader for your team name) and tap on it when you see it. Click Join Team Now to join. Please do not start the Scavenger Hunt until the date/time of the meet-up as this will start the game’s clock running and the game ends automatically after 12 hours
Note: The app is quite buggy so please be patient with it! Sometimes you may need to force close the app and re-open it
- All team members need to have the Let’s Roam app to be able to join the team but once the game starts, unless you’re the Team Leader or the Team Photographer, you will not need to look at the Let’s Roam app at all. Let the Team Leader run the game for you.
Example of how a challenge is completed
A solo challenge may be something like this:
Find a cafe that has a picture of a cat on its signage
Remember to follow the rotation of your team members i.e. you should already know who is going to be tackling this challenge. In this example, I will be doing this challenge so I would do the following:
-
Listen to the Team Leader read out the challenge to the team. If there’s any confusion, ask questions.
-
In Google Meet, I will share a tab/window that has my Google Maps page (in incognito mode). Confirm that my team members can see it.
-
I will switch over to the Google Maps page, and start searching for cafes with a picture of a cat on its signage. Luckily, I know of a cat cafe in my local neighbourhood and thankfully they have a cat on their signage. So, I will go to this POI and open the photos section to look for a photo (uploaded by the public or the owner) of the signage.
-
Once I’ve found the photo, I will zoom in to make sure that it can be seen clearly.
-
The Team Photographer will check to see if the whole team is ready to take a photo. Once they are, the Team Photographer will take a photo (using the Let’s Roam app) and then submit it.
-
Once the challenge is completed, I will stop sharing my Google Maps tab/window and go back to the Google Meet tab/window.
And you’ll get team photos like this:
It’s not the best because it’s in landscape orientation but this is what gets submitted into the Let’s Roam app. Anyway, the cycle repeats for the next solo challenge.
Group challenges are pretty much the same but usually without the need to share a tab/window. The challenges could be something like:
Find an object in your house that has the Google logo on it.
And every team member will come back with an object and show it on camera for the Team Photographer to take a team photo.
Anyway, I hope that the info above is enough to get you started on trying out the Scavenger Hunt virtually! Also, because the game still seems to be available, if you can play the game in-person, it is a whole lot more fun to play it in the original format! So grab your family members, your friends, your neighbours and give it a whirl!! Maybe they will enjoy themselves so much, they will join the Local Guides program! ![]()
You can set up your meet-ups as part of January’s Global Wave courtesy of @NareshDarji and @KashifMisidia. It’s a call to all community members to join in the fun of starting 2026 in high spirits and energy! #LocalGuides11
