How to earn socks or other perks

I have read in many FB posts, questions regarding how to earn these socks.

May be these has been answered many times, here is my suggestion.

Even if you write 2 billions reviews, upload a billion pics, or get to level 10, that doesn’t mean you will get any perk.

It depends on the quality of your reviews.

You don’t have to be a professional writer, but your reviews have to be fun, compelling, so that readers can really get what you are writing…

Be authentic, be yourself…

Write what YOU think about the place, the food, or your experience, like if you were telling about it to your friend.

Be enthusiastic, be accurate and fair, tell what is positive and what was negative about your visit, but be fair.

This doesn’t guarantee you any perk, but it will be more likely you will get one…

Keep reviewing and be safe out there.,…

Hi @BenjaminAlanis

Thanks for sharing your perspectives on why and when socks are awarded to local guides.

I need to respectfully disagree with you when you wrote: “It depends on the quality of your reviews.”

Are you sure that the quality of photos and edits are not also relevant? I don’t think we should promote the notion that the quality of our contributions is ever evaluated by any humans simply because evaluating all the contributions of more than 125.000.000 local guides is not feasible.

Promoting the perks as something you can expect if only you contribute a lot will for most lead to disappointments.

Many high-level local guides can confirm that they never received any perks. Including me. And I believe many actually do post high-quality reviews, photos, and edits without ever receiving any perks.

I wish more local guides would appreciate the pleasure of helping others and keeping information on Google Maps organized and updated rather than focussing on some cheap socks. The monetary value of socks is a fraction of what postage and handling would cost in my part of the world.

May I suggest that you edit your post to the section called Perks rather than How-tos?

Sorry for writing this.

Very best regards

Hi

I do welcome your input, but its is not the same to just write a “good meal”, or “nice place”, or short reviews like that, or to really express what you experienced about a place, that is what I meant with “quality of the reviews”.

Its not about a pair of cheap or expensive socks, its the joy to have something to show off, not that its a big deal, its more like a souvenir of something that we local guides enjoy doing, and that is helping out with out expecting to receive anything in return, we do it just because we like to do it.

Thanks again for your time and your opinion

Best regards

Hi @BenjaminAlanis

Don’t forget to mention the person with @+ username. Then they/we will get notified and you are more likely to get a reply.

Your point about getting reviews of higher quality is super valid and much needed. I completely agree. It was just that you linked this to almost non-existing perks I reacted to.

I noticed that the Perks category is no longer to be found. I don’t know what happened to it.

It’s a token of appreciation to local guiders. It is not about the cost or quality of the sock. I was extremely happy when I got mine even being a local guide level 5 at that time, recently though.

I believe it is about the quality of the post, review and the information one is passing, how helpful people find them which is the whole essence of local guides in the first place. A picture or video can combine all this information and makes a top review. So you both are certainly correct in that regards.

I wish to become a super local guide.

Thanks

@BenjaminAlanis , thank you for providing your feedback on Local Guides perks and possible ways of earning them.

To help you better understand how you and any Local Guide can earn a Local Guides perk, here are two things to keep in mind and what you need to do:

How do I get perks?

Perks are offered to Local Guides from time to time as a thank you for contributing great content on Google Maps. You may receive a perk because you’ve consistently shared high-quality contributions, reached a certain level, or often review a category related to a perk. Perks may be offered to Local Guides in particular regions. To see where you are signed up for Local Guides, please visit your Local Guides settings.

How will I know if I’ve received a perk?

Local Guides are notified through email about perks they’re eligible to redeem. To receive perks, you must be subscribed to emails about them and contribute regularly on Maps. Please be sure that your email preferences have perk emails enabled by visiting your Local Guides settings.

Keep up with your good work as a Local Guide.

If you have any related Local Guides program questions, please come here to the official Local Guides online forum: LocalGuidesConnect.com and ask them to get them officially answered.

Cheers,

Karen

I would have to support the words of @MortenCopenhagen and @KarenVChin in the topic of perks @BenjaminAlanis

The Googlers never reveal how the perks decisions are made. I would suggest some are automated and these are the ones that go out to great many Local Guides. The perks like socks are a little more personal. I can’t give you a magic formula for how to get them, but I’d suggest that you need to get noticed by the team for good reasons, once noticed consistent contribution is likely to be a key in the decision making process.

Did you know that one of the people @PennyChristie who was involved in the early days of the socks idea didn’t get a pair herself until just late last year at Connect Live 2019.

Keep your contributions up and one day perhaps the socks will come. In the mean time you can always join the #LGBFC (Local Guides Bare Foot Club).
