This is from Fasching (carneval) in Passau, Germany, on Tuesday We got off of work at noon and went to a parade and then the party there. It was a fun day of loud music, wild dancing and some nice drinks in great company! I have to admit that carneval in this area of Germany (the South) is not celebrated quite as excessively as in some more Western areas. But it was still great.
Great photos @NatalkaR
@manulele81 suggested a meet-up in Venice for Carnival last year, what about to do it on 2020? You already know how much I miss you.
Wow, @MarleneGu , beatiful. Carnival is fun, everywhere, it doesn’t really matter if you are in Venice or in a small Village.
We need to talk about Carnival sweets, @user_not_found
, @TorM , I’m sure @AntonellaGr have some photo of Frittelle to share
Great photos, @FaridTDF , but of course is Summertime in there, so they can have smaller costumes. How is the temperature in there?
A Meet-up in Venice for Carnival? I’m ready!
Here you can find an old photosphere of my carnival (or carnaval?) in Venice

I’m waiting for the meetup!
As alternative I can suggest CERTALDO (Tuscany) in July! a big event with a friends meet in Venice during the carnival.
See you!
Yes, of course @ErmesT tommorow I show my super cake Now it is in process! By
La temperatura el día lunes era de unos 8 grados centígrados, pero sin viento, con lo cual se podía desfilar en cueros jajajs @ErmesT
Farid
OMG, you guys are soooooo fancy! I love it! <3
How cool!
@ErmesT , I’ve only seen a Venice Carnival in photos and in movies.
The question I have always wanted to ask a Venetian is - do you just walk around the city in costume and mask to be seen and admired (photographed) by everyone else? Is there a cultural significance or reason to get dressed up? And why only dress in a certain historical period or periods?
I see in your amazing photos, including @AntonellaGr 's, people in elaborate costumes and wearing fancy masks and headpieces. Are they locals? Or do people (tourists, non-Venetians, Venetians) come visit on Fat Tuesday and prance around like peacocks to “be seen?”
I apologize if I sound ignorant. I know the Brazilians party themselves into a national holiday. We, in the US, have Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
Are there lots of private parties - the reason why all these people are dressed up in elaborate costume and walking around or traveling through the canals in Venice?
Cheers,
Karen
One thing you notice in Venice, in most costumes, is elegance.
In my opinion the choice of Venice is dictated by the fact that this city is and has always been a city rich in refinement, art and taste.
The people I met “masked” come from various cities, often non-Italians, and want to march in a timeless city with a timeless dress.
This year I saw the Viareggio carnival: beautiful but completely different from Venice. The Carnival of Viareggio is for fun in a young and playful way, that of Venice is to immerse yourself in an imaginary world, to make a journey through time: the Belle Epoque.
Bye, Emanuele
Thank you @KarenVChin for your questions
To understand the carnival we must start from the etymology of the word. Carnival, (Carnevale, in Italian) is probably coming from the latin therm “carnem vale”, that means “take off the meat”. The event is related to the Christian culture and tradition of Lent. Mardi Gras is tha day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent in the Western Christian Church. Carnival is the period when everything is allowed, before the penance. In some areas this is considered the period of madness and transgression, where everything is allowed.
In Venice they celebrate carnival representing the “Golden age” of the city, the 17th century, when Venice was the heart of arts and culture. The period of the baroque, of the excesses, but also of the decadence, well represented in costumes and masks of the Venetian carnival.
During Carnival all the city become an unique, big stage where, as you said, people prance around like peacocks to "be seen". They are both locals and tourist. If you are a tourist you can rent the elaborate costumes for a day, while the locals are mostly making the costumes by themselves.
There are a lot of private and exclusive parties, and to get a place in there in there usually the reservation is made one year in advance.
During Carnival everyone can be the actor in the main stage, protagonist of a show that involves the whole city
Sorry no more frittelle nor pictures of frittelle. I ate everything…
But if you want to see what I had after frittelle check “Venezia hidden places”
I am ready for Carnival 2020 Meet up in Venice @manulele81
ciao
Antonella
Hi @KarenVChin
I can add something to @ErmesT reply.
There are also a lot of public events like concerts, markets, playground for kids. A lot of parades, historical parades and the parade on the water.
Here is a link to Youtube to a video recorded by a local TV about the parade on the water. Skip the first 3 minutes about Arsenale, the area of Venice recently restored
ciao
Antonella
As a Brazilian girl living in Texas I celebrated my Carnival at the gym . The Lifetime gym as a Brazilian zumba instructor and she made the Mardi gras/Carnival very exciting here. Look at the costumes. I really had a good time
Very nice
This is magnificent. Up until now, I’ve only heard of the uniqueness of Mardi Gras Parades, your pictures exhibit the extraordinary costumes, fascinating masks and I can only wish to be a part of someday.
@ErmesT Could you tell me if anyone who join the parade has to wear these one-of-a-kind masks?
Hey @ermest =D
I’m trying to upload my photos in the right way, but I don’t know what’s going on.
Anyway… here are some of my costumes during the Carnival.
Soon I’ll post about carnaval here in my city!
Best wishes from Brazil!
I went through your album of this carnival… which left me speechless! Looked like I got a live tour of this unique celebration. The mystery & fragrance in the atmosphere and the robust and calm exhibition of jewels of art, culture and history are directly transmitted to the viewer through your splendid clicks!! Hats off . I shall read more about Shrove because I don’t know why I have a natural attraction & curiosity (mixed with goosebumps) for masks and costumes and this was a generous treasure of these in Venice
…!! You are a magician @ErmesT
The first photo of the post is soo deep so nostalgic that it pierces your soul… admirable photography
BTW @ErmesT if you ever tried to participate in one such show and have your photos of that, do share with us some time
