How do you celebrate Carnival? - share your photos

Hi Local Guides

next Tuesday (March 5th) is Shrove Tuesday, or Mardi Gras, in French.

Most of the celebrations started last week, on fat Thursday, in a lot of Places around the world, with a lot of craziness everywhere, mostly in the last weekend.

Rio de Janeiro and Venezia are the two cities in the world where the carnival is a very big event, with a lot of fun, music, parties, colours

Living very close to Venezia, this weekend I decided to face the crowd, together with @AntonellaGr , to take photos and videos to share in Connect.

We reached Venice at noon, in a train fully packed of people. Outside of the train station, people was warming up, preparing to reach the center of the show: Piazza San Marco

There are two main ways for reaching Piazza San Marco from the train station: Canareggio and Accademia
Canareggio is the most common, so a lot of people take that way, because is the easier to follow

The classic “alternative way” is Accademia, crossing the bridge “ponte degli Scalzi”

We decided for a “third way”, a bit longer but less crowded. On hour way we had the possibility to see how the people live during Carnival.
Venice is a special place, because really it seems to go back in time, on this part of the year.

People with classic Venetian costumes, with feathered hats and clothes from the 1700s, are walking on the streets, while the life around them is flowing in a very normal way

The way is long, for reaching San Marco square, and masked people is everywhere.

I can write a lot, but we can do it later, so now I will make a long story short, and pass to the main stage: Piazza San Marco.

Indeed the center of the show, the costumes in there are impressive. You can rent a Venetian costume, or you can buy it, and use it every year, in an impressive parade.

I cannot share with you all the photos, but you can see more in my album: Carnevale di Venezia 2019

During our walk, I captured some street music, and I tried to assemble it with my feeling of Venice, beautiful and melancholic

And you, what about your Carnival? - Share your best Carnival photos here

Hey @ErmesT ,

It seems like you had a great weekend! I’ve been to Venice but only in the summer. My goal is to visit the city during the carnival and participate in the celebrations. This would be a great new experience!

On the 3rd March is Bulgaria’s National Holiday, so there were a lot of celebrations here too. It’s common that people climb up to Shipka Monument which is known as a symbol of freedom. It was built in memory of the fallen soldiers during the Shipka battles in the summer of 1877 which were crucial for the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman rule.

Celebrating the Freedom is always a beautiful moment @MoniDi , and this seems to be very exciting in there. Do you climbed too?

Venice is crazy in this week. We decided to go on Saturday because is usually the less crowded day, but when we left, at five pm, they were setting up some “one way” for pedestrians too, because starting from Saturday evening the city is so crowded that is quite impossible to walk, if you don’t know some alternative way.

Also a lot of private parties are organised, and there are tourist that reserve parties and hotel one year in advance

Thank you @IshantHP_ig

Carnival is a moment of fun, In some country is is also a very elaborate celebration, with a deep meaning about “being fool” for a day

Your pictures are incredible, @ErmesT ! This looks like quite the celebration. I’ve been looking for something fun to do in NYC for Mardi Gras, but I haven’t found anything (yet).

Hi @brittym

Thank you so much

I wasn’t in Venice only for celebrating the Carnival, but also for something that you will love for sure.

It will be the subject of another post, related to ancient printing houses, to Aldus Manuntius and to the Armenian Tradition. I have been invited to visit Palazzo Zenobio, the most important place of Armenian Culture in Venice.

But I want to spend a second you show you this place that, I can confirm, is inside Venice

Hi @ermest

My contribution to Carnival. I succeeded in taking the picture of the mask with that incredible hat after one hour chasing him (or her?)

Hi @ErmesT ! Great photos as usual!

These Venetian masks are really beautiful: they have so many details and are created in an obsessive way in portraying the period costumes.

Perhaps this is what makes the Venice Carnival so special and different from the others!

I was there several years ago, and it is true that there are so many people that you move even without wanting …!

The atmosphere is truly magical … it takes you back in time, in the full splendor of when Venice was a Maritime Republic!

@AntonellaGr : amazing your last photo! Who knows how many hours have worked for this costume!

Thanks to both for sharing this wonderful event!

Bye,

David

@davidhyno

I was asking myself the same question. " How many days for creating that costume?" At least a couple of months I think

Excellent and insightful post, @ErmesT - really love the photos and the portraits that really show the detail in the costumes of those participating. I also had no idea that this was celebrated across the world in so many different ways!

Yes @davidhyno and @AntonellaGr

I agree about the preparation, but I want to add the attention of every detail.

Here you can see the crop of another shot of the same costumes. Look at the eyes. She use contact lenses with the same tone of the costume
