The Amdanga Kali temple is 450 years old and is one of the oldest in the North 24 Parganas. The Kali idol here is Maa Karunamoyee. The number of devotees increases several times during Kalipuja. The history of this temple goes back to the era of the Mughal emperor Akbar.
Sehensah Akbar conquered the 11 Bhuniyas of the 12. However he was unable to to defeat the 12th Bhuniya Maharaja Pratapaditya of Jessore. After the death of Akbar his son Jahangir sent his maternal uncle Maharaja Man Singh of Amber to defeat Maharaja Pratapaditya. Amber Singh defeated Pratapaditya and took him as the Prisoner of War to Agra.
With Pratapaditya his Brahmin Commander and chief instructer Shankar Chakraborty was also captured and taken to Agra. Pratapaditya died in the captivity. However Shankar Chakraborty survived and being a religious person he caught the attention of Jodha Bai the queen of Akbar and mother to Jahangir, who herself was a very pious lady. Later on the request of Jodha Bai, Shankar Chakraborty was released from the prison with honour.
Maharaja Man Singh on the order of his sister Jodha Bai bought Shankar Chakraborty back to his native place Barasat. While returning back, on the banks of Sukhhabati river in Amdanga he established this Karunamoyee Kali Temple.
Goddess Kali bought forth the prosperity and good fortune of the Barasat town. As of now, this place is frequently visited by travellers and pilgrims all over the country. Paid Parking space is available inside the temple premise.
