The list feature of Google Maps is a very useful feature and we can utilize it in a lot of situations. How much do you know about the feature?
What is the list feature
Users of Google Maps are able to make lists that follow various themes and are able to publish or share them. And some published lists may be displayed on the explore tab on Google Maps App.
We can use it for the below purposes and so forth.
- As a favorite places list for each region
- Making a favorite shops list and share it with your friends
- As a destinations list for a trip
- As a tool for a game using the Google Maps
How to make a list
We can make a list from either PC or smartphone.
1. Push the button for making a new list
The button on a smartphone is under Saved menu. And the button on a PC is under Your places → Saved menu.
2. Input the name of the list (Within 40 chars)
3. Add places
There are two ways to add places.
The first is pushing the “Add a place” button and search and add a place to the list.
The second is opening a place on Maps and push the “Save” button from the menu and choose the list. The basic way to add place from PC is almost the same.
You can choose either of them as you like.
Customize the list
We can customize the list to improve usability and visibility.
1. Add an explanation of the list
This is not a required element but I recommend you add this. Especially if you will open the list to the public, let’s add it as much as possible. The maximum characters are 400.
2. Add an explanation to the places
This is also not a required element. But the note area is very useful because you can not only add the explanation but also add your private note like a food that you want to eat at that place. If it is a public list, let’s note your recommended information for the list’s users.
3. Select a headline image for each place (Only Android smartphone)
If you are using an Android smartphone, you can choose the beautiful photo as a headline image for each place yourself.
4. Change the order of the places on the list (Only Android smartphone)
If you are using an Android smartphone, you can change the order of the places as you like. In case you did it, the order numbers will appear on the left of the place name. Using this feature, you are able to make a list such as the top 10 recommended shops.
Notice: As this feature is only Android, the order will not be reflected and the order numbers are also not visible on other devices.
Use a list
1. Sharing options
There are three sharing options on the list. You need to choose the most suitable setting for your purpose.
- In the case you choose “Private”, nobody is able to access the list except you.
- In the case you choose “Shared”, you can share the list with particular people who are invited by you. For example, you made a list for your friends or private groups, this setting will be good. And if you choose this from your smartphone, you have options that other users are able to edit the list or not.
- In the case you choose “Public”, your list will open to the world. If you make a useful list like your recommended shop list, please use this setting.
2. Display on the Google Maps
From the menu of the list page, you can select that a particular list displays on the Maps or not. If you make a lot of lists, your map will be full of markers of your lists but you can turn some of them off using this feature.
3. Use the “Visited places” feature (Only smartphone)
When you see a list through your smartphone, you will be able to confirm the number of visited places. This feature is connected with the timeline feature, so you are able to see the date and the time when you went to the place the last time directly on the list. By utilizing this feature, you can enjoy aiming to visit all the places on the list, playing a game like a stamp rally along with your friends, and so forth.
