Health Edu seRies on cOnnect (HERO): Toilet Save Lives!

Hello, starting this month I launched new series: Health Edu seRies on cOnnect (HERO). This new series is about Toilet! :grinning:

Let’s start! If you hear the word “TOILET” what comes to your mind? Eww, something dirty, something that taboo to talk about in public or satisfaction LOL. Actually, the toilet has an important role in our life, it’s because no one can avoid the call of nature  . In a year, we may happen to visit toilets about 2500 times and even more when we have an issue with a stomach which could happen many times a year.

History of the Toilet

Does anyone know the history of the toilet? Well, it’s unclear who first invented the toilet. But ever since humankind first existed, the earliest was undoubtedly a hole in the ground. . Probably millions of years later, the modern toilet just developed. From some literature, in ancient times around 2,500 B.C., communities in Scotland, the Indus Valley, and Mesopotamia used pipes to carry waste from the inside of their dwellings to the outside. This was also similar to ancient Romans’ use of a sewer system to deposit waste from latrines into streams and rivers. However, the first underground sewer in the city of Rome was around 500 BC. The flush toilet was invented in 1596 but just widely used from 1851. Before that, the toilet was a motley collection of communal outhouses, chamber pots, and holes in the ground. In Post-classical history, toilets are also well-known Garderobes as most commonly found in upper-class dwellings. It translates as guarding one’s robes - is thought to come from hanging your clothes in the toilet shaft, as the ammonia from the urine would kill the fleas. A huge public garderobe was constructed in London and emptied directly into the River Thames, causing stench and disease for the entire population. With that, garderobes were replaced by the “commode”, a box with a seat and a lid covering a porcelain or copper pot. In the 16th century, Europe discovered modern sanitation.

Brief History of Flush Toilet

Bathroom technology really arrived in the 20th century with flushable valves, water tanks resting on the bowl itself. Many toilets now have automatic flushes and the sealed “vacuum water closet”. In Indonesia, toilet also has several names like Kamar Mandi (bathroom, since most of the time toilet along with bath activities), Kakus, Kloset, Jamban, or included WC (Water Closet). Originally, ‘toilet’ means – “act of washing, dressing, and preparing oneself” which is derived from French.

Facts about Toilet

The World Toilet Organization was founded on 19 November 2001 as a World Toilet Day and endorsed by WHO. Why this is important? According to UNICEF around 60% of the world – 4.5 billion people – don’t have a toilet that safely manages human waste at home. Some key points:

  • Toilets save lives! Without toilets, deadly diseases spread rapidly. Over 750 children under five die every day from diarrhea caused by unsafe water, sanitation, and poor hygiene.
  • Globally, 1 in 3 schools do not have adequate toilets, and 23% of schools have no toilets at all.
  • 892 million people worldwide practice open defecation ( on the side of the road, in bushes, or in rubbish heaps)

In order to get everyone in the world using toilets, we need to triple our current efforts. That doesn’t just mean more toilets, but creating the desire for people to use them.

As a local guides, can we do something about this matter? The answer is Yesss!! Simply extend your time while doing the review on google maps, to include some information about toilets whenever possible, like the cleanliness of the toilet, water supply, availability of toilet paper, sanitary napkin, kids’ toilets, also accessibility feature too whenever possible. We can also add the information on how to access the public toilets: operation time, can we access them for free, or is there required special access?

Below are some examples of my review on google maps, toilet is one point that I always include in my review whenever it’s possible.

Sanitation has helped human health, development, and economic prosperity.

What is your story @Ewaade_3A @travelbyjp @TravellerG @KashifMisidia

Happy World Toilet Day! :wc: :wc:

Saya ingat beberapa waktu yang lalu postingan seseorang Local Guides di sini tentang toilet kuno di suatu kebudayaan lampau dihapus/disembunyikan Moderator. Personally I don’t feel it’s appropriate to show the picture of ‘active’ toilet publicly eventhough it’s for educational purpose. Lagi sarapan sambil melihat gambar toilet rasanya gimanaaaaa, gitu. Saya pribadi yakin masih ada banyak HERO2 lain di luar sana yang tak kalah menarik untuk dibahas.

But it was just me.

Wow @doc_dells .

You have some effort to do this something that many Local Guides pass it.

You visiting so many toilets to resume it in your post.

I facing that toilet in the commuter line network much much better in recent years, about cleanlines, and well maintain.

Please do me a favor to review two toilet that impress me.

  1. Google Indonesia, with security door where only person with card can enter.
  2. Paulaner Brauhaus, spacious , neat and clean with flower decoration.

@doc_dells I think your post is both informative, interesting, fun and important. Here in the US where there is usually a public toilet in every building, and at parks where people gather, the sanitation can be lacking, some are not handicap accessible, and may be missing entirely. I think this post is important for Local Guides everywhere. Since I take a lot of photos I usually take a photo of the restrooms (the most common name here) or bathroom, another name. This gives people an idea of what to expect before arriving. Most are handicap accessible by law depending on the age of the building. Sometimes, If the toilet is outside there are portable toilets, which are like big plastic outhouses. They are just a seat with a hole and a company is supposed to come pick them up when the container gets full. These are rarely handicap accessible. The main problem is sanitation. Even in beautiful department stores that have signs on the wall saying someone checks for cleanliness hourly, they can be filthy and unhealthy. When I see this on a regular, repeating basis I will mention it as a negative point in my review. Thanks for bringing awareness to this issue!

Hello from Indonesia :indonesia: @lynneannec and thanks for your support. Indeed, toilets or restrooms and their cleanliness play a huge role in overall sanitation. Especially the public health impact associated with the increased risk of infectious diseases, such as diarrhea and others. In the last 5 years, toilets in office buildings, malls and other public facilities in Jakarta and other cities have increased rapidly. However, in some rural areas, access to toilets and the availability of clean water or toilet paper are still lacking. Hopefully by sharing this information can raise awareness of the importance of :wc:

Hola @doc_dells es muy interesante tu publicación. Muchas veces, no sé por qué, evitamos hablar del inodoro, pero si lo pensamos y como bien dices, es un elemento fundamental en lo sanitario, tanto en nuestra vida individual, así como integrantes de la sociedad. Mi reconocimiento total, por encarar el tema y muy buena la “Breve Historia del Inodoro”. Espero más de la Serie “HERO”.

Gracias.

Wow… this is very unique & informative post, thank you Mbak @doc_dells :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

My fav experience with toilet was when I went to Tokyo, Japan almost 4 years ago in a hotel, a lot of buttons  I was so curious & tried all the buttons there :joy: I was so amazed. I was bit of “norak” (It’s Indonesian word, not sure what it called in English :joy: ).
