Hello everyone!
I recently received an exciting update from Google Maps that I wanted to share with all of you. One of my photos has just crossed 1.3 million views! Travelling and capturing these moments brings me so much joy, and seeing a single photo reach so many people around the world is a wonderful reminder of the impact we have as Local Guides.
Here is a little bit about the photo, the composition, and why I think it resonates with so many people looking at the map.
The Location: Monsoon Palace
This photo was taken at the beautiful Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace in Udaipur, perched high above the surrounding landscape. It was a clear day, and the contrast between the historic architecture and the rugged, mountainous backdrop was absolutely stunning. The Angle and Composition
When we visit scenic viewpoints, the first instinct is often to walk right up to the edge and take a panoramic shot of the landscape. For this photo, I decided to take a few steps back.
By shooting from inside and using the beautifully carved traditional archway to frame the shot, it creates a “picture within a picture” effect.
-
The Silhouette: The dark, solid silhouette of the arch provides a sharp contrast that makes the bright blue sky and the distant hills pop.
-
A Sense of Scale: Including the people standing on the terrace gives the viewer an immediate sense of scale and depth, making the vastness of the landscape much easier to appreciate.
Why Photos Like This Matter
As Local Guides, our photos do more than just document a location; they set expectations. A photo like this is important because it captures the experience of the architecture as well as the view. It helps tourists visualize exactly what it feels like to stand inside the palace looking out, which can be the deciding factor for someone planning their travel itinerary. Helping the global travelling community discover these unique perspectives is what makes our contributions so rewarding.
Over to You! I would love to hear from you all. What is your most viewed photo on Google Maps? Why do you think that specific photo gained so much traction, and what angle did you use to capture it?
