Here at Local Guides, we champion accessibility every day. These issues are important to us because we understand the value of making our community more accessible.
In honor of National Disability Awareness month, we wanted to take an extra moment to highlight some incredible Local Guides who are truly making a difference in this space. We sat down with them to get their thoughts on this topic and tips for creating more effective reviews on Maps. Read on to hear their stories.

Why do you think it’s important for people to share accessibility reviews and photos on Google Maps?
I believe it is very important to share accessibility information on Google Maps to promote inclusivity for all. Everyone wants to enjoy the same great local businesses, and accessibility information on Google Maps helps every person prepare ahead of time so they can do this! For instance, is there nearby parking for my handicapped van? Are there easily accessible tables for a large party with multiple wheelchair bound diners?

Do you have a tip to help others improve their accessibility reviews and/or photos of places shared on Google Maps?
List creation will help others find accessible places in their area, including accessibility info in the reviews and photos. Also, while uploading accessibility related photos, you should add a meaningful caption.

Why do you think it’s important for people to share accessibility reviews and photos on Google Maps?
Accessibility is one of the inclusion pillars. With that said, anyone has the opportunity to contribute to a better social life for people with disabilities, by sharing accessibility information in public places. It does necessary need to be a detailed review, but some tips can be very helpful. E.g.: be careful with irregular flooring or stairs.

Do you have a tip to help others improve their accessibility reviews and/or photos of places shared on Google Maps?
Next time you enter a place (supermarket, school, park, etc.) just take a photo of the entrance and ask yourself if everybody could enter (e.g. a ramp or voice guidance). If the answer is yes, that place will probably have many other facilities. Take photos of the adapted restrooms, pictograms, and braille texts and upload them to Google Maps. If the answer is no, have a deeper look and think about how to make a review, in a positive and polite way, and let them know about these aspects. Maybe that business will improve their facilities.
Bravo to these Local Guides changing our world for the better, one review at a time. You can see more from them on our Instagram, so be sure to follow along.
