Feature Request: Create a Dedicated Help & Tutorial Section for Local Guides Connect

I believe Local Guides Connect should have a dedicated Help Section where tutorials, guides, and help-related articles for both Google Maps and Local Guides Connect are organized in one place. This would make it much easier for contributors to find accurate information and better understand how to contribute effectively.

For example, when adding a new place on Google Maps, many contributors are often unsure which category it belongs to or which category is the most appropriate. Experienced contributors may understand these distinctions and select the correct category.

However, many users lack sufficient knowledge about categories and may choose the wrong one. Additionally, categories can change over time, which may result in many places being listed under incorrect categories on Google Maps.

To address this, I believe the Local Guides Connect dashboard should include a dedicated “Map Categories” section containing a complete list of Google Maps categories. It should also provide detailed descriptions, examples, and images explaining which types of places belong to each category.

This would help contributors select the correct category when adding new places and significantly reduce inaccurate information and spam.

Some people may say that a few posts on this topic already exist on Connect. That may be true. However, searching for those posts and finding the necessary information can be time-consuming, and many contributors may not take the time to do so.

In addition, while Google Maps currently provides a list of categories, many subcategories can be confusing, and some categories are not easily discoverable.

For these reasons, I hope the Google Maps and Local Guides teams will seriously consider creating a comprehensive Help and Tutorial Section and making it easily accessible from the Local Guides Connect homepage. It could also be linked directly from Google Maps for easier access.

Thank you, everyone.

Great topic, @rashedul-alam

I pretty much agree with you.

The help section on Connect is demoted to the category named Google Maps Tips & Tricks. And we don’t have a Help desk category.

Even users in need of help with Connect need to post in the category Google Maps Tips & Tricks despite this not being very logical. The questions might be completely unrelated to Google Maps.

The LG team argued that Connect is not a help forum but a site to create and support community among LGs.

They argue that other fora exist to assist Maps users. Among them is the Google Maps Help Community where they are better equipped and staffed (both volunteers and paid staff) to help with data related Maps issues.

Currently, I’m more concerned about getting some much needed help to all the newcomers on Connect. I don’t feel Connect is sufficiently welcoming and easy to navigate, so newcomers do not stick around as they can’t easily find something of value and interest to them on Connect.

I hope you are aware of these corners of Connect:

Superb suggestions @rashedul-alam :+1:

In addition to what Morten has shared, here is an amazing welcome card created by @SholaIB

Welcome to Connect Card

I am creating a dedicated page listing all helpful tutorials for Connect users, since Google Maps help is already available elsewhere, as Morten mentioned.

Hello @TusharSuradkar @rashedul-alam

Thank you for the suggestion. Nevertheless, I think one thing local guides or people in general find difficult is reading. I don’t feel extra tutorial page is the thing. Lots of that on connect already. We have had alot of meet-up educating local guides about connect and Google maps respectively. I think connect is just a heap of posts and articles and topics etc that you wonder who is reading them or benefits from it all.

Tushar has lots of educating posts on connect

@Kumaarsantosh has lots of educating

 posts and meet-ups.

Morten has lots of educating post on connect

The list goes on.

I actually have 2 version of welcome articles

Welcome to Connect Card

A welcome to connect hand

In both cases I added animation and illustrations just to make it easier to read and understand and help the readers to navigate connect.

Nevertheless, I don’t know how useful or how many local guides it has helped. One solution I think I like is guidance by fellow local guides and moderators.

We are all just so concerned about writing our own posts than educating or interacting with newbies or even helping older ones.

These are my views on this. Thank you for involving me.

Happy guiding

Cheers

@MortenCopenhagen @SholaIB @SholaIB Thank you all very much. I learned a lot from your comments and insights.

I reviewed several of the articles you mentioned. They are good and informative. However, most of them are written by individuals. In my opinion, it would be even better if Google provided official guidance on these topics, similar to how platforms like Facebook and X (Twitter) publish their own official documentation and help resources.

Since these articles are based on personal knowledge, experiences, and interpretations, there is always a possibility of misunderstanding or misuse. For example, if someone’s contribution does not align with another person’s views or preferences, there could be room for biased judgment. I am not saying that this is happening, but the possibility exists. If Google provided direct and official guidance, such concerns would be minimized.

In any case, thank you all once again for your valuable feedback and contributions.

And

We would not have made the missing tutorials if Google had made them. Trust me

Great, thanks for sharing @MortenCopenhagen
Yes I trust you :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
