Hello and Eid Mubarak to all Local Guides Community.
We are going to celebrate Eid Ul Fitr in some parts of the world tomorrow and some places will celebrate it on Friday.
Let me share with you first shortly why the Muslim world celebrates Eid, and what is Eid day.
Every year after 29 or 30 days of Ramadan Fasting, Eid Ul Fitr is a gift by the Almighty to the people and marks the end of the Holy month of Ramadan, a period of fasting, kindness, and good deeds. That’s the reason Muslims are not permitted to fast on Eid Day.
There are different parts of the Celebrations for Eid in different parts of the world. But the common things in all these celebrations are Fitra & Eid Prayers.
Let me explain shortly about Fitra and Eid Prayers.
Fitra (Fitrana): Fitrah is a charity taken for the poor a few days before the end of fasting in the Islamic holy month of Ramadan but it’s necessary to give before Namaz E Eid (Eid Prayers). Through it, a person presents his/her Prayers to Almighty Allah in a more beautiful way.
Eid Prayers (Salat Ul Fitr) :
Eid prayers, also known as Salat-Ul-Eid and Namaz-E-Eid, are the special prayers offered to celebrate Eid Day traditionally in an open space allocated or field available for prayer.
So these were Common things which all Muslim community follow for Eid Ul Fitr Day, but there are some other traditions in different countries for this wonderful day, so let’s know together that how we celebrate Eid day in our regions alphabetically.

Eid-ul-Fitr is one of the two major festivals of the Muslim world. Bangladesh being a Muslim majority country, the joy and happiness of Eid are spread to all the citizens of the country, regardless of religion. After one month of fasting, Eid-ul-Fitr brings happiness to all the Muslim people in Bangladesh.
Covid-19 pandemic has changed the celebration from last year. As a Long-Distance couple, I and Pavel always wait for any celebration, especially the eid. During the festival, we get the chance to meet each other. Normally I go to Malaysia to celebrate eid with Pavel. Sometimes he returned to Bangladesh to celebrate with us.
The preparation of eid beings long before eid day. We become busy buying new clothes for all family members. Before Covid-19 we normally went to our home town (village) to celebrate the festival. Every home in every village becomes full during this period. The night before eid brings suspense to us because eid will happen the next day only if the new moon is seen the night before. Me and Pavel along with other family members try to go rooftop to see the new moon.
My sisters or Pavel’s family, depending on where I am celebrating the eid, become busy coloring our hands with henna. On the day of eid, Pavel goes to the graves of his family and close relatives to pray for them. Before prayers, I prepare semai and snacks. If celebrating in Malaysia then I also join for eid prayer. Last year I could not go to eidgah due to covid. Coming back from prayer we give salami to the children and youngsters.
We prepare special foods and in the afternoon we go to visit our relatives’ house. If we celebrate far from each other then we do video calls and share the happiness. We try to share our happiness with all.

At Eid Al Fitr (Festival of Breaking Fast), after observing Fajr prayer and before the Eid Prayer, we give Vitara(a small amount of money given as charity) on account of each person of the family to the people in need. We also wear new dresses and we go to one of the Prayer Grounds(an open ground to allocate more people) where all the Muslims will be coming. At different prayer times, Eid Prayer usually will be held at different Prayer Grounds. Once after the prayer, we wish each other at the Prayer Ground, mostly saying Eid Mubarak(Blessed Feast/festival). We then visit the graveyard and pray for the people in our family who passed away, people we know and for all people, and also pray for humanity. We then come to the home, we wish our parents and all the members of our family. We also give Eidi(Gift) to the youngsters and especially to children and we also get Eidi from our elders. Everyone will be happy and very excited in Eid Al Fitr and collect Eidi from the elders. We have special dishes in the Eid Al Fitr. We usually have Mitthi Samiyya in the early morning and Breakfast usually will be Roti and mutton gravy and Lunch usually will be Briyani. We then visit the relatives who are in our native by going to their home and wishing them. We wish relatives who are not in native to us by wishing them over the phone. We give sadaqah(charity) to people. We also wish our friends, people we know when we meet them after the Eid Prayer.

In Eid Fitri, Indonesia has many traditions, and our famous traditions are visiting Family, ketupat, and Sungkem.
Visiting a Family is very tricky, since you have the main family, a family from Father’s side, mother’s side, and the list will be added if you’re married. You will have the in-law side. Don’t forget your boss’s family and your neighbors. MASHA ALLAH. On the 1st day, you will be exhausted from visiting your family.
FRIENDS? NO!
You can meet them next week! Cause above list will end on the 3rd Day of Eid. Hahaha
When you visit lots of places, you will be full of food. Ketupat and meals, along with cookies only you can meet at Eid Time.
Sungkem is a private moment. It is a Javanese tradition. You kneel, and put your hand and head in your parent’s lap, and ask for their forgiveness and prayers. This is usually done after Eid prayer, only the main family members. This momentum is emotional, cause usually, both cried.
During this pandemic everything has changed, last year I could not visit my family. Then I hosted a virtual meet-up.
We send each other food and gifts through delivery services.
I was lucky, Allah gave me the chance to have Sungkem with my mom. But many people can not visit their parents, which causes the government to forbid us.
This Eid, I hope I can see my family. Hope everyone can do the same.

In my country Indonesia we have much tradition for celebrating and this happens only on Eid Mubarak day, so here we go.
Yes, before the day of Eid Mubarak celebrated most of us shopping, hunting new fashion, from toe to hair. So it doesn’t feel like a wonderful shop, mall, traditional market, etc full capacity, even during the pandemic in my small town, which is fully crowded in every shopping center. This tradition started because not all people can buy new clothes all time because of economic issues but the Eid celebration is one of the moments for buying new clothes at least once a year.
Ketupat is special food during Eid Mubarak, made of rice and wrapped in coconut leaves
Prayer Eid Mubarak, sharing money with a small amount with children’s neighbor :
In the morning all family members go to the mosque or a large area for Eid prayer, after Eid we can meet each other with neighbors, and don’t forget to share your money with a small amount with their children.
After visiting each other with neighbors now, time for visiting and praying for the family that has passed away in the cemetery, and of course remind us that one day we will die. Life Is Not Forever

As a Muslim and in the Arabic region, almost all Arab celebrate the same way and activities. The most appropriate thing is that we should visit our parents and check on them so they become satisfied and happy when they see their sons coming, especially if their parents live far away. When we are done from Pray ( Salat A Eid ). Before visiting our parents, we drink our Arabic coffee and eat some kind of traditional house-made desserts made from flour, dates, and sugar, or made from nuts instead of Dates as an option, called “Mamool”.
And most important is visiting our sisters who got married and live far from us. As Muslims, the Quran urges us to take care of our sisters and daughters even when they are married. On Eids Occasions, we focus every year to see our daughters, sisters, and mothers, they are family Kinship. ( Selat Al Rahem ) in Arabic.
When we are done checking and visiting our parents and family members, we spend the rest of the Eid days hosting our visitors and offering them the Arabic coffee
and the Mamool. We also do the same to visit our friends inside their houses. Sometimes a small number of Arabic families prefer to go to restaurants to eat there. Also as it is kind of changing the Ramadan month routine since we spent most of Ramadan days in our houses.
Families also go to Duaa in the cemetery for dead family members.
We can also take our kids to satisfy them and make them happy in a place with a kids activity like playing areas in Malls and …etc.

Eid ul Fitr is celebrated to mark the end of the Holy month of Ramadan and welcome the month of Shawwal. This day is marked as a public holiday in Kenya, and as mentioned above by other local guides is almost the same as celebrated in Kenya, after Fajr salat and before going for communal prayer, we give zakat ul Fitr, then go for Eid prayers always done in fields. After that is meeting family and friends to share meals and have fun. exactly as people start fasting on a different day, the same will be for Eid, some will pray the first day according to Saudi Arabia calendar, and some the second day as to how they viewed the moon. And this always brings confusion and debates on why not to mark this day together, as a Muslim family. so the celebration is for two days and mostly the second day respectively will be marked as a public holiday. How I wish this always happens on one day, InshaAllah. Many Muslims donate on this day to elderly and vulnerable Muslims to enjoy and celebrate the day. And in the last ten days, much shopping is done especially for kids, and in Nairobi, Eastlight is well known for shopping. Normally this eid is focused on children to enjoy the day in fine clothes and Heena application and also going out for festivity in public malls and parks, some with packed food especially who visits this recreation park well known by many, Uhuru park. Much fun for kids here at Uhuru pack and many more places to let the kids enjoy this day. The most famous dish is Biriani And pilau and much more of your choice. After the two days of celebration, 6days of fasting again began for most people.

Eid is a very special time for me, even if I am not a Muslim. Malaysia where I live is a predominantly Muslim country. And many of my close friends are Muslims. And most of my closest Muslim friends are foreign people who work in Malaysia. Most of them are not the most well-to-do people, most just live very simple lives. And for many of them, their immediate families are far away, so I get to be their family to spend this important day with. Although many of them live in different parts of town, I try sometimes be with them at least some time throughout the day, which meant a lot of traveling and visiting, since I stay rather far out from the city,
In prior happier and safer times (before Covid), where we could move around freely; after waking up on Eid morning, I would say a short prayer for all my friends, so they would be safe and blessed. Then I would just head out to place after place, to visit friends, almost throughout the day. Simple people celebrating Eid in a very humble and simple way, nothing lavish or fancy, just sharing lots of care for each other. And most of them would prepare a simple biryani to share. This means I get to share many biryanis throughout the day!
And where the opportunity presented itself, a group of us would arrange to visit the public open house of the Malaysian Ministers. (Not this year of course, due to Covid). And we of course take the opportunity to visit the place, and enjoy the many varieties of food that is served for the open house. It’s not always, we get to eat all the Malaysian favorite satay, lemang, rendang, kuih and so much more. It’s always amazing to get opportunities like this.
But alas, this year as well as last, is a bit different, Since, last year, we in Malaysia were all on lockdown. And we in Malaysia just started our Movement Control lockdown 3.0 again, just a few days ago. Will this pandemic ever end? So this year, I am sort of stuck at home, and I will just prepare some biryani at home, and virtually call each of my many friends and just join them virtually for food.
This year, I wish peace, happiness, health, and safety to everyone who is celebrating Eid. Stay safe and keep everyone close in prayer, so we may get out of the pandemic soon.

Eid is always a time to reflect spiritually and to connect with loved ones physically.
As it has been mentioned by others Eid is marked by an early morning prayer in the fields where all the community members gather to pray.
After prayer people exchange pleasantries and at home, food is shared with friends, relatives, neighbors, and the needy.
After coming back from prayer you will visit relatives and friends to congratulate them for a successful month of fasting.
There you share money with children and the elderly to show your Love and appreciation.
These visits go on for the following day also and after that people resume their normal routine and activities.
Two things that I didn’t mention are
Before Eid day comes people do many shopping for clothing especially children clothes and foodstuff with drinks. Most of the food is prepared at home.
Second, the King (Emir) with his elites go out on day two to greet the community. They go out on horseback riding and are dressed in beautiful and colorful dresses depicting the olden days of warriors.

For me, my day started with Eid Prayer and visiting Graveyard to meet our loved ones who are not with us now, especially my father. I miss him every day, but especially on Occasions like Eids.
Breakfast :
As on Eid Day, it’s prohibited to fast, so after Eid Prayers, we start our day with traditional Eid Breakfast, and for this special occasion our breakfast is also special with some food items which are so much related with the name of this Eid (Meethi Eid or Sweet Eid)
Our dining tables wouldn’t be completed without SheerKhurma and Meethi Siwwaiyaan, along with other breakfast items.
Mehendi & Glass Bengals for Girls:
One of the beautiful traditions which we have been following since our Childhood that we buy Glass Bangles and Mehendi (Hina) for all females in our home, and they wear it on Eid day. Especially Mehendi is one of the most beautiful traditions, till now I buy Mehendi for my daughters and they create some beautiful prints on her hands with it.
Visit Relatives Homes & Eidi:
On this joyful day, we normally visit our Eid elder, brothers, Grandparents, Uncles, and Aunties homes, where we have another interesting tradition specifically for Eid Ul Fitr.
And it’s called “Eidi”, Eidi is the gift money which everyone can ask their elders without any hesitation, and truly we all already prepare for it that we have to give Eidi to everyone younger than us. (We can ask from ourthe Elders also, even I m now 44
)
After this long trip, I normally come back home and sleep for a long time, and in the night meet with friends.
In Pakistan, we have Official holidays for Eid every year.
I wrote the whole routine and traditions which we are enjoying from our childhood, but After Covid life is a bit different, like last year, there was Fitra, Eid Prayers, fewer visit relatives homes, but no Eid Hugs, no Outing with friends, but I hope soon everything will be fine and we all can live a normal life as we were living pre-Covid.

Being a neighboring City of Dearborn (biggest Muslim city in the US), we are happy to feeme Ramadan Festivities in the air that is usually followed by Eid Prayer at the end of Ramadan. In normal days prior to Covid, every night at the Masjid they have iftar and taraweeh prayer. Last year, in 2020, the whole activity was shut down and everyone did it at home with their own families. Our Eid prayer was at a friend’s backyard and only 3 families were there.
Like any other celebration, on normal days we usually go to the masjid followed by a big festive party. Where we would be in line to get our meal. It is a big tradition with the Arab American community. Our Indonesian community also has a gathering where we cook traditional food and bake cookies, it’s more like potluck type. We go to the park so children can play with others. If the park provides a place for kayaking then we will bring our kayak.
This Eid we will go to a friend who has an open house and we usually will bring something to share.
No holiday for Eid day at the workplace . I usually take a personal day for the Eid prayer and the festival.
Below are some photos of hubby and I in front of the Masjid after Eid prayer and satay that were ready to grill.

As a Muslim, Eid plays a big role in my life. Back home it used to be a lot of fun and food and mingling with family and extended family and their families and friends. Wearing new clothes and new shoes and a beautiful smile all day was one of the highlights of the day. The celebration would start right after the sighting of the moon on the previous night and would continue for days. Obviously, things are not the same when you are in a different country, especially if most of the people in that country are not of the same religion as yours. It will be my fourth Eid-ul-Fitr in the USA this year. I am still not used to the absence of the amazement of Eid here.
Eid in the USA is very simple. People who can afford, take the day (or only the morning) off for the Eid prayer. Those who can’t take off can’t really afford to enjoy the day much, except for spending some time with their family in the evening and having some good food. Typically an Eid starts here with going to the mosque for the Eid prayer early in the morning. People bring food to the mosque to share with others on Eid day. So, after the prayer, we usually mingle with other Muslims at the mosque. We get to meet people from around the world and get to eat different kinds of food. I love this tradition here. After that, we usually come back home. If someone has any loving ones resting in peace, they pay a visit to the Restland after that. If not, they just spend the rest of the day at home or visit other Muslim families near them. If Eid is on a weekday, we usually save the friends and family visiting part for the weekend. Wearing fancy new clothes, making fancy food and having lots of fun take place then. Some people arrange Eid Reunion on the weekend to get the best of the time and try to enjoy it as much as possible in desi style. That’s how we celebrate Eid in the USA. ![]()
