Discover More with Google Maps: Weather, AQI, and Smart Sharing Features!

Hello Local Guides!

Google Maps keeps getting better with updates that make exploring and sharing easier than ever. Here are two cool features you might have noticed recently—and if you haven’t, you’re in for a treat! :rocket:

:sun_behind_rain_cloud: Real-Time Weather and AQI Information

Planning a trip or just curious about the conditions at your destination? Google Maps now shows temperature and Air Quality Index (AQI) directly on the map!

Here’s how it works:

  • Look for a small weather box in the top-left corner when browsing maps.

  • It displays the current temperature and air quality.
  • Tap it to see:

  • “Feels like” temperature
  • Daily highs and lows
  • A 12-hour weather forecast

Want to customize temperature units?
You can switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit:

  1. Open the Google app.
  2. Go to Settings > Weather.
  3. Choose your preferred unit.

This feature is super helpful for planning outdoor activities or deciding whether to pack an umbrella! :closed_umbrella:

Pro Tip: You can switch to the dedicated AQI map layer for a more detailed view.

:date: Launched: February 2024 for Android users and gradually rolled out globally.

:camera_flash: Location Sharing Made Easy with Screenshot [iOS Only]

Ever taken a screenshot of Google Maps to share a location? Now, Google Maps simplifies this with an option to share the place link directly when you capture a map screenshot.

Why it’s awesome:

  • You no longer need to send a separate link.
  • The link appears with the screenshot, making it easier for recipients to navigate to the exact spot!

These features not only make navigation smarter but also enhance how we share and contribute as Local Guides.

Great tips.

I need some help regarding sharing your location link with a screenshot. How do you initiate this?

I normally just share a place or drop a pin and then share that.

Thanks for the kind words, @MortenCopenhagen !

For sharing your real-time location with a screenshot, you just need to follow the below steps:

  1. Take the screenshot of the Google Map.
  2. As soon as you take the screenshot, a pop-up appears in the right bottom corner of map saying, “Share your location?” and a link to Share. (as seen in below screenshot)

  1. Just click on that “Share” and you can share your real-time location through different platforms as per you wish.

That seems to be a feature of Android in combination with Maps. You make a screenshot or the map, as you can do in any other Android app. Then on the bottom of the screen you will see very briefly a bar asking what to do with the screenshot. Selecting the symbol for share, gives you the additional option “Link sharing” with or without removing the coordinates.
I correct myself:
This is a function from Samsung and not the same as described by @KetanChhaniyara . Instead of sharing the link to Maps, it stores the image file on a cloud server and sends the link to the image instead of the file itself.
What I don’t understand now, is the option to remove the position data, since it does not share any coordinates.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! I truly appreciate your input. I just wanted to share that, on my iPhone, the feature behaves a bit differently. Instead of giving the ‘Link sharing’ option, it prompts me to share my real-time location rather than the screenshot itself. It’s interesting how the feature varies depending on the device you’re using

I’m on a Pixel 7a running Android 15.

I have never seen the popup share link option. Here is what I see after taking a screenshot (with or without my blue location dot being in the frame)

If I tap the shown share button I get this:

The Quick Share option starts looking for nearby phones similar to airdropping on iOS.

Maybe there is a setting somewhere I need to tweak.

I don’t remember having done anything special, but possibly a setting, I forgot about …

Yes, might be the option varies handset to handset.
Alternatively, to share the real-time location on Android, following steps can be followed:

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app !

  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle|autox18 and then Location sharing and then New share Add people.

  3. Choose how long you want to share your location.

  4. Tap the profile of the person with whom you want to share your location. If asked about your contacts, give Google Maps access.

  5. Tap Send.

@MortenCopenhagen it’s feature of OEM or their propriety OS not the android or Google maps. Like what @WilfriedB said. It’s not difficult thing once you have the location data and screenshot (ss) it can be done
but it’s just a round about thing. Why share link from a ss ? Why not share links right away and directly :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
