I visited the market today and decide to share a fruit I found out today. It Date palm and Tiger nuts. They are very cheap in the Northern part of Nigeria compare to other part. In Hausa language Date palm is called ‘debinu’ and Tiger nuts ‘Aaya’
Thanks for sharing. Are those fruits common food in Nigeria? Can you use them to make some cakes or you just eat them directly? I love eating “debinu” but I have never tried “Aaya”. I am curious what it is like.
To make the most of your experience, you can take a look at this post What makes a good post?
Hello, to answer your question they are mostly common in the northern part of Nigeria.
You can use the milk gotten from the tigernut to make your cake. You can also try making flour out of the tiger nut for your cake ( after getting the milk from the nut, the leftover shaft can be dried and blended then sieved to get flour). It’s also a different way to get flour for baking. I’ll call it Tigernut flour. You can also replace your sugar with the date palm to give it totally different taste.
@Oluwabori1 , this is such an amazing way of preparing your flour and baking the finest of sweets! I have never heard before of such flour and I am so curious about it. I think other Local Guides will love it too!
Maybe you could share with us some more photos of the sweets you made using Tigernut flour?
Yea they are common in any part of Nigeria. Sure you can use them to make cakes and eat directly. This is what Muslims do use to break their fast during Ramadan(Recommended). An example is “Date bar” which consists of floor & date palms. Aaya is what is called Tiger nuts. An example of this is the drink called “Kunu Aaya” drink made from tiger nuts Its is been grounded together then the shaft is been sieve out. The drink looks like an energy drink, it taste like milk
I have taken the tiger nuts before and its tastes good. I even recently had a sip of its juice two days ago. But i wouldn’t say so much about its taste until when i have a full grasp of the drink.
Medically, Tiger nut milk is a rich carrier of potassium which can regulate blood pressure since potassium is very good in reducing blood pressure when high.
Secondly, Tiger nut milk help to fight against bacterial infection like Escherichia coli, Salmonella as well as Streptococcus.
Thirdly, Tiger nut milk help to prevent cancer because of the high contents of soluble glucose. Personally I do take Tiger nut milk made by myself because of the health benefits. In fact is not only those points i mentioned here, it has more health benefits
This is very informative @Aishat . Thanks for sharing with all the community. I think that all the Local Guides will find this information very valuable and helpful.
If other Local Guides know other positive effects of Tiger nut milk they would like to share with us, this would be great!
